I really like them! But, the ones I can think of have to many fault, despite my love for them.

Piers - reminds me too much of Piers Morgan

Rupert - Reminds me of Rupert the bear, plus, you can only shorten it to Roo!

Any ideas?

P.S, please not Tarquin

Hmmm, I don't know if you can generalise about 'posh/toff' names any more than you can when people ask about 'chav' names.

Instinctively, I would give the stereotypical answers of Rupert, Montgomery, Ptolemy etc too. But, I'm not convinced that's actually reality (well, there might be a general correlation between some names and social class but there are also too many exceptions to be able to call them exceptions.)

I've worked in a 'posh' school for 10 years. We've had boys called:
Ptolemy, Sebastian, Frederick, Jason, Dylan, Gavin, Rupert, Cosmo, Darren, Connor, Orlando, Lysander, Hugo, Zak, Hughie, Wilkie, Alfie, Jonty, Riley, Montgomery, Rafi, Bailey, Maximillian, Jordan and Ferdi. Plus plenty of others that are usually categorised one way or the other. Of course, the majority have been called James, Samuel, Daniel, Oliver, Oscar, Noah, George and Thomas, just like everywhere else.

Kenneth and Rafferty? Fuck no.

cecinestpasunepipe · 11/06/2016 19:27

Diggory

MitzyLeFrouf · 11/06/2016 19:27

Look up the birth announcement in the Telegraph to see what names the toffs are using these days. I suspect a lot of them go for un-toffish names like Samuel and Thomas.

Tiggeryoubastard · 11/06/2016 19:28

Hunter?

Some poor kid has been called Bunker!

Auntpodder · 11/06/2016 19:30

Lysander (I know of two)

TexanKenDoll · 11/06/2016 19:30

You have to distinguish two paths on these naming types I think. 1) truly posh and aristocratic who choose pretty unusual/family names as they have no need to show how posh they are, and 2) upper middle class/Royal names that cross over to working class, good solid names that won't scare the horses or upset the middle classes

Of my family/friends

In 1)

Waldorf
Valerian
Bendor
Mungo
Edwin (shortened to Ned)
Lazlo
St John (pronounced Sinjun)
Aldred
Alfred
Arthur
Louis
Conrad
Maldwin
(Subset, Catholic posh: Benedict, Dominic, Miles, Edmund)
(Subset, Jewish posh: Max, Bernard, Robert, Jacob)

In 2)
William
Charles
Henry
George
Edward
Hugh
Phillip etc

A lot of the names already mentioned I would identify with well to do, urban upper middle class, very nice names, but not 'posh' in the old sense.

throwingpebbles · 11/06/2016 19:31

I know a young Cosmo. Super posh but super lovely. And a very cute but posh baby Hector

I wouldn't say Hunter was a posh

throwingpebbles · 11/06/2016 19:31

name tho

LBOCS2 · 11/06/2016 19:32

I have nothing new to add to this thread, but seriously - someone called their son Bendor?! Poor guy.

One of my exes is called Benedict. Not posh, but his dad's a vicar.

pieceofpurplesky · 11/06/2016 19:33

Xander

Ptolemy
Atticus
Barney

MariaSklodowska · 11/06/2016 19:34

Hugay Cosmay Rollay Arlay

TexanKenDoll · 11/06/2016 19:34

Bendor is a traditional name for a few English super posh families, Grosvenors for example.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 11/06/2016 19:37

DS's name is on the thread already - I really liked Benedict too when we were naming him.

Happylandpirate · 11/06/2016 19:37

Does anyone have any thoughts on Casper? Currently pregnant and I love it but my husband won't entertain it (at the moment!!!) and several family members have commented saying its a "posh name"

MitzyLeFrouf · 11/06/2016 19:37

Bendor is beyond cruel. Far, far, far beyond cruel. Cruel is a distant country to anyone who calls their son Bendor.

MitzyLeFrouf · 11/06/2016 19:39

Casper sounds more 'European' than 'posh' to me. As in the lovely Danish Kasper from Borgen.

NapoleonsNose · 11/06/2016 19:39

Ralph or Raif
Mungo
Leoline
Montgomery
Algernon
Jeremy

ButterflyOfFreedom · 11/06/2016 19:43

Ones that initially sprung to mind have been mentioned already - Miles, Giles, Ambrose, Monty, Quentin, Rafferty, Crispin, Hugo, Horatio, Cuthbert...

Could add - Amos, Cornelius, Atticus,Victor, Bastian, Edgar, Tobias,Jasper, Angus, Fergus, Godfrey, Francis, Wilbur

MitzyLeFrouf · 11/06/2016 19:48

Rafferty is always described as a posh name on MN, but it's an ordinary Irish surname so no more posh than calling your child Murphy or Walsh really.

MariaSklodowska · 11/06/2016 19:51

I know right Mitzy I was going to say...in whatt world is 'Rafferty' "posh"?
Ditto Miles

Mouthfulofquiz · 11/06/2016 19:58

I love the aristo names - lots in my family over the years. Not anywhere near the aristocracy by a million miles, but probably just as bonkers!

Maryannesingleton · 11/06/2016 20:02

Jago
