I really like them! But, the ones I can think of have to many fault, despite my love for them.

Piers - reminds me too much of Piers Morgan

Rupert - Reminds me of Rupert the bear, plus, you can only shorten it to Roo!

Any ideas?

P.S, please not Tarquin

Algernon

Marmalade85 · 11/06/2016 23:25

Also St.John which is so posh I had to look up how to pronounce it before I called them (Sinjun) as I didn't believe it was an actual name.

WellErrr · 11/06/2016 23:26

Caspar!
You MUST use it, because I can't!

MitzyLeFrouf · 11/06/2016 23:27

Has there ever been an uglier name than Algernon?

WindPowerRanger · 11/06/2016 23:49

I agree with Texan.

The poshest person I know has sons called George and Hugh.

The next poshest has Albert.

Also Charlie, Fergus, Hector, Ivo, James, and Angus.

Gwenhwyfar · 12/06/2016 00:03

Mungo.

And speaking of Baldrick, Rupert is shortened to Rupe in Blackadder goes Forth.

Julian
Florian

Valentine

NamelessEnsign · 12/06/2016 06:58

Nearly everything I wanted to mention is already listed here Grin.

Hugh is lovely, nice choice!

There's also:

Torquil
Montague (Monty)
Augustus (Gus)
Theodoric (wish I'd had the guts for this!)

CheerfulYank · 12/06/2016 07:00

It's funny how different it is in the States.

Dominic definitely down market (except if you're of Italian heritage), same with Dante, Octavia etc. (Mostly because they're mostly used in the black community which is quite terrible if you think about it Angry )

I love Octavia anyway. But that is a girl's name. As is Aubrey. And Brynn. Wink

Artandco · 12/06/2016 07:07

Brynn? That doesn't sound like a name at all

CheerfulYank · 12/06/2016 07:11

Or Bryn. Either way. Girl. :)

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 12/06/2016 07:15

I have a friend called Rupert. Everyone calls him Poopot. We're all over 40 Blush

pouncehill · 12/06/2016 07:30

I have a Rupert Grin

My sister and her boyfriend want to call their first child Vladimir or Wolfgang (although their hamster is called Vladimir so think that's crossed off the list now)

CheerfulYank · 12/06/2016 07:34

I love Rupert :) It's basically unheard of here , though.

GinIsIn · 12/06/2016 07:43

Both Ruperts I know are known to most people as Bear. We are in our mid-30s, so they were really pissed off when Bear Ghrylls suddenly got so popular. Grin

As PPs have said, many of the so called toff names are old family names so if your DP has a 'posh' background, rather than picking a name just because you think it sounds posh, why not ask your MIL if she has a copy of the family tree and start there for inspiration?

JemimaMuddledUp · 12/06/2016 07:48

I went to uni with a Rupert who was known as Roops.

ErgonomicallyUnsound · 12/06/2016 07:48

I went out with a Rupert for 5 years. I called him Rupee ; most of his friends called him Rupes. Not especially posh. He had a friend called Julian who also wasn't especially posh. just thought he was

The poshest people I know/knew have such ridiculous names they are known by nicknames or massive shortenings.

akkakk · 12/06/2016 08:01

Bryn is a boys name as in Bryn Parry - cartoonist and with his wife Emma, founder of Help for Heros

For most posh people their name is irrelevant as they will go through life known by some ridiculous nick-name such as Bumble given to them in the nursery or at boarding school ;)
