I'm writing as I'm so upset about comments that have been made about my 11 week old daughters name. She is my first and every time someone says something like' you mean like the lager' or'really !? Stella?' It hurts so much. I feel so protective of her and I love her name. The comments weren't made by anyone close but by people at a wedding and a work colleague. I'm now really worried she's going to have negativity following her name in the future, makes me so sad and feel guilty that I've chosen it.

Stella is a beautiful name. It's from the Latin meaning star. (I'm sure that you know that). Tell her when she is big enough. She will be proud to have such a lovely name.

My grandmother is called Stella and I think it's a beautiful name. If I had had a girl, I would have named her Stella because it's such a pretty name. However, I have been blessed with three boys so never had the opportunity to use it

Her name is beautiful. It's one I would consider using (also on that list Olive and Blythe and Kate) if I ever had more.

Says more about the person if the first thing that comes to their mind is alcohol.

Stella is lovely. I think it's a big name for a little baby, but she'll grow into it. Don't think about changing it!

Stella McCartney hasn't done too badly.

I think it's a similar name to Nancy and Tessa, I always think of those three names together.

Personally I'm not keen on the name.

I work in schools and I've come across this name a few times..not once have I ever associated it with lager....in fact whenever I hear it I think of stars in the sky...

Ignore them, they're idiots, it's a lovely name. How rude of them.

Thank you for your kind messages bar one. It's made me feel much better. I know the people that commented are not the kind of people we'd ever choose to hang out with but I know she'll come across those types in life. I'm no good at biting back, wish I was and I'd put them in their place.

It's a great name, cool and strong, but also pretty. Unfortunately you'll always get a twat along the way with something to say, ignore them or tell them to go fuck themselves!

I love love love the name Stella , dd3 was almost going to be called it, but she's a Disney princess instead . People always say things about names. I've 3 daughters and have had comments along the lines of "oh she'll be one of hundreds", "why did you spell it that way?" and various Disney princess comments about each of them.

I think it's a really lovely name and until I read your post I never even connected it to the lager.

Replied to your other thread, but if their first association is "Stella Artois" that just shows they like crappy lager. Ignore.

My friend called her baby Margot, and someone said "As in Chateau?" Obviously a higher class of alkie

It's a lovely name! I know a toddler Stella and it really suits her. It is definitely getting more popular (not so much that it's overused but definitely enough that people shouldn't be raising eyebrows at it twats).

It's a beautiful name. It's also closely related to a brand of lager for many, many people. You will get the odd comment, and so will she while she's growing up. But as her personality develops she will grow into her name and people will associate it more and more with her, and less with the beer.

I was in this situation a year ago, albeit with a different name.
It's the implied criticism that is the problem, not your daughter's name (which is beautiful, not that my - or anyone else's- opinion matters).
Do not listen to anyone who tries to tell you how to be a parent or what you should name your child. The only people who pass judgement on these kinds of things are people who are insecure in their own choices and decisions.
YOU are her mother. YOU know what's best for her. Sod everyone else

My point was that if you name a child something which is very synonymous with something else, in this instance a brand of notorious lager, surely you would have thought of this before, and been prepared for the odd smirk, no matter how much you like the name.

It probably won't be the last time it's mentioned, and taking massive offence and getting abusive probably isn't the way to go.

It is a lovely name.

A guy at work has a GF with this name. Unfortunately, when he kept saying "I love Stella " we thought he meant his beer!

I apologise for my hot headedness yesterday and calling you what I did. I don't really understand why you posted what you did. Especially to a new mother who is pretty tired and sensitive. I gues I need to toughen up so if I ever meet more folks like you I'm not so effected.

To me Stella just means star, it's a nice name. Stella McCartney may pop into my head but that's it!
I'm not a larger drinker and don't associate with anyone who is so that brand would never be top of my thought process.
My own child has a name associated with a cat food. Nobody has ever mentioned it to my face. But when I picked it I was aware and it really doesn't bother me.
You need to relax it is a nice name just smile and ignore those who think larger rather than star, see it a a bit of a class test!

It's a great name. However sending horrible PMs to people is not cool, tired mum or not.
