I'm writing as I'm so upset about comments that have been made about my 11 week old daughters name. She is my first and every time someone says something like' you mean like the lager' or'really !? Stella?' It hurts so much. I feel so protective of her and I love her name. The comments weren't made by anyone close but by people at a wedding and a work colleague. I'm now really worried she's going to have negativity following her name in the future, makes me so sad and feel guilty that I've chosen it. Sad

OP posts:

Rose, I think I'm a few months you will look back and realise that no-one was trying to be nasty to you.

But, really - if people were willing to make unpleasant comments to your face, did you really think they'd be kinder on an anonymous Internet forum?

Perhaps you should stay away from the baby names board for now. Your DD has a beautiful name and I'm sure she is a beautiful little girl.

Well OP, people will think of Stella Artois when they hear the name. Not all, but some. That's something you have to accept when you pick a name - that it could remind them of a beer/the neighbours dog/ various celebs. That's true with any name.

Anyway Stella imo is perfectly grand, I've taught two of them so it must be rising in popularity.

The PMing is rude and as said above, I think you'll back on it in a while and cringe.

Ok so to me there are several connotations for the name Stella.

I think of the drink and it being called 'wife beater' - I don't drink it, don't think I ever have but the reminder is still there.

I also think of Stella McCartney which actually makes me think of sausages and old men.

I then think of how people say it in different accents and voices. An East London accent makes it sound paticularly harsh but most other accents and it sounds like a softer name.

I then think of stars and constellations and how beautiful they are. This is my last thought which is nice because it's the nicest.

So if I meet a Stella all of those things rush through my head but I'm left thinking of stars.

One of my best friends daughters is Stella and I love it! She is amazing and I love the Star connotations xx

Stella is one of my favourite names. It clashes horribly with our last name, and that is the only reason it isn't top of our list for this baby.

It's beautiful. Feminine, simple in its pronunciation and spelling, lovely meaning and not overused!

AvaCrowder · 01/07/2016 01:27

Why did you get so shirty? That's not a very nice way to do things. Don't ask for opinions then pm people who don't agree with you.

Stella is my cousin's name. She is gorgeous and so is the name :)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/07/2016 23:29

I don't connect it with beer - it's Latin for star and a lovely name.

Ignore those silly people.
