What can Minnie be short for?

My brother's just had a baby. She didn't have a name so they started calling her 'mini' as she is small. Which has turned into Minnie. Which they are now thinking of as a name, but it sounds a bit too nicknamey on its own. What could it be short for? Minerva?

I can think of Minnie Mouse and Minnie Driver who have this name but not sure if it is a shortened form of anything or name in its own right.

Marianne, Miranda?

I can tell you though, as a shortie, I would despise being called Minnie.

QueenofallIsee · 18/05/2016 08:53

Araminta? I like that as a full name but not keen on 'Minty'..Minnie is a nice alternative

MyKingdomForBrie · 18/05/2016 08:53

Minerva... Not that I like it personally!

MiddleClassProblem · 18/05/2016 08:57

Minnie is a name in its own right but can be a nickname from many names. Minnie Driver is Amelia. I think some people use it for Margaret or Wilhelmina.

MotheringShites · 18/05/2016 09:01

It's a commonly used term for vulva around here. Sorry.

MiddleClassProblem · 18/05/2016 09:04

JimJamJem · 18/05/2016 09:44

I'd assume Hermione

FizzyFeet · 18/05/2016 09:47

Millicent?

counttotenandbreathe · 18/05/2016 09:53

Dominique

NetballHoop · 18/05/2016 09:56

I know a Miriam who is a Minnie.

Blush That now sounds very rude given the vulva comments.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 18/05/2016 09:59

We were thinking of Minnie for DD. The wisdom that is Mumsnet advised me that Minnie is also a nickname for female private parts in many parts of the UK.

We chose something else.

1horatio · 18/05/2016 10:08

Wikipedia says this: "As a first name, Minnie is a diminutive of Minerva, Winifred, Wilhelmina, Hermione, Mary, or Amelia."

I personally think it could also be short for Margaret, Mathilda, Martha, Miriam and Mina...

maggiethemagpie · 18/05/2016 14:02

Thanks I will pass them on. I think minnie will be a nickname now whilst she is a baby whatever her proper name may be

I know plenty of people who are known by a nick name that is nothing to do with their real name, often due to the name the bump was called before they arrived. So they can go on calling her Minnie at home even if they decide to call her Alexandra or something as a full name.

Other than that, I do love Minerva!

SecretlyChartreuse · 18/05/2016 15:45

If my cats had been girls, they would have been Minnie and Ginny short for Minerva and Ginerva.
