I'm due a daughter soon. I'm looking for something a bit unusual, but still pretty sounding.

I came across the name Meadow - what do you think?

OP posts:

Meeep · 30/03/2016 15:06

I like Meadow!

VolvicTouchofFruit · 30/03/2016 15:09

I like Meadow... I'd never be able to bring myself to use it, though...

The OP didn't say she'd NN her Meads? Hmm she pointed out that it's the only NN, which is true! I think it would be shortened to Meads, but it isn't too bad! Smile

turdfairynomore · 30/03/2016 15:12

If you love it-go for it! I know a 20 year old Harvest. My kids are younger than her and thought it was hysterical that church service (Harvest Sunday) was called a girl's name!!

Runningupthathill82 · 30/03/2016 15:15

If I met a child called Meadow round here, the first thing that would occur to me is that they were conceived at Meadowhall.

Doesn't sound hippyish to me. All of my hippy friends seem to have Esmes, Ediths and Elsies.

So yeah, Meadow is a good name for a shopping centre, or maybe a farm animal. Sorry.

rainbowstardrops · 30/03/2016 15:42

I love it! Then again I really like slightly alternative names! I like most that have been mentioned on this thread and my DDs name was listed too Grin

Go for it OP, it's lovely. Way better in my opinion than all the boring/old fashioned names that people think are so classy.

Maybe have a more boring popular middle name?

Meadow Grace or something similar? Smile

Expatmomma · 01/04/2016 06:07

I have never heard it used as a first name but think it is a very pretty.

Mel0Drama · 01/04/2016 06:35

I like it, unless your surname is Hall.

Paintedhandprints · 01/04/2016 09:37

I like it. Not sure why you bothered posting on here thpugh, it seems to be populated by hard core 'traditionalists'.
No different to calling a child Hayley which means hay field, or Kimberley which means Kings city meadow. But sounds nicer.
bitchy today through lack of sleep
Once baby is born, people quickly get used to her name. Even if they personally don't like it.
I doubt future careers are ever affected by a childs name these days.
Also, if a child is bullied at school for their name, then that is the bullies fault. They would find something to fault even if you chose a 'popular' name.

Crazybluesmarties · 01/04/2016 09:45

I really like it, I know of quite a few Meadows and they're all usual people

theAntsareMyFriends · 01/04/2016 10:14

I like it. I love nature names and it sounds very serene and feminine enough without being frilly.

Meadow flowers will be coming into bloom around now so its a nice summery name too.

If you like it and think you will regret using it then go for it. People will read it and know how to pronounce it which I think is an important naming criteria.

I have a v unusual name. I love it and I love that it is unusual.

LemonLuLu · 01/04/2016 15:08

I know a Meadow! Her siblings have equally unusual names, so it sort of "goes" IYSWIM. I not a fan of the name though.

WineCheeseSleep · 03/04/2016 12:02

It's a bit more unusual than I would personally choose but I think it's pretty and along the lines of Willow/Heather etc as others have said.

Babylove2015 · 06/04/2016 17:08

First impression ; where's the cow?

She is going to get teased a lot at school.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 06/04/2016 17:32

Babylove, I expect she would only get teased by someone who thought like you most people wouldn't even think that let alone it be the first thing that pops into their head

gsd1 · 08/04/2016 09:55

My daughter is called Meadow. I have only had one person tell me they don't like her name. I love it and am so glad that we went with it.

Raines100 · 08/04/2016 10:28

Meadow is absolutely fine. Wouldn't bat an eyelid. Doesn't sound remotely chavvy. Just a bit less popular than Willow, but of that ilk. It's obviously feminine but not frilly. Makes me think of Tess Durbeyfield.
Go for it if you love it. Your DD won't encounter any problems. Its not one of those names. You'll only get compliments in rl if you use it. It's not out there enough to cause the furore it causes on MN

squoosh · 08/04/2016 10:45

To be honest lots of these "newer" nature names are pretty silly - Willow, Fern, Wren, Bluebell

Fern?

That's not new! That's a standard late middle aged woman name.

squoosh · 08/04/2016 10:46

Similar to Hazel.

MackerelOfFact · 08/04/2016 12:38

I'm not usually a fan of nouns-as-names but I actually quite like Meadow.

It also hasn't been hijacked as a brand like some other similarly pretty names (Flora, Clover, etc).

Meads (presumably pronounced 'Meds') is horrid though!

Flowerrr · 08/04/2016 16:28

I think it's nice - I'd never use it, but it's a good name!

plimsolls · 09/04/2016 10:44

I absolutely love it. It's one of those names that gives a happy feeling when I think of it.

It's on a list of "Adore but won't quite work for us" along with Summer, Clover (girls) and Ivo, Linus (boys).

meadowb · 04/09/2020 09:16

My name is Meadow and I think it’s a lovely name, I definitely prefer it to having a common name like ‘Megan’ or ‘Hannah’ etc. I always get comments from people about how they like my name too!! I wouldn’t advise posting questions like that oh here... you will always get someone who doesn’t like your name and you shouldn’t let that persuade you as it’s your child not theirs

Carouselfish · 04/09/2020 09:50

If Summer and Willow are fine, Meadow is too. I like it OP.

Unseeliequeen · 04/09/2020 09:58

Meadow Soprano is my first thought.
