Last names as first names...

Hello all,

I'm trying to decide on boys names and really like the idea of using last names as first names.

So far i have shortlisted:

Jackson
Hunter
Carter
Avery
Baker
Smith
Paxton
Harrison
Mason

What do you think? Any other suggestions?

I work for a few people who have first names as surnames iyswim. They are constantly irritated by people who call them by the wrong one!!

Some of these could make your kid sound like a law firm tbh.

Archer.

I wouldn't use Smith, it's such a common name anyway.

I quite like surnames as first names, they're always quite strong and solid and timeless

Hudson.

Ooh, I love Avery!

I know a baby 'Cameron' I love it

LOL at the law firm comment...i never thought of it sounding like that

I also really like Taylor but it is the surname of an ex so unfortunately its out but i REALLY love Hudson!

Not too keen on Archer but kind of agree with Smith being too common.

Makes my top 2 so far Avery and Hudson!

I have a Harrison.
Avery is fabulous and I believe a girl's name too?
I believe Frankie (from the Saturdays) has a Carter and Parker since I caught a glimpse on OK sort of magazine. I guess she's have to go for another -er name if she has z third.

Met a Baxter once which I thought was a cool name

My least favourite is Smith. Makes me think of the Sex and the City character.

Avery is on my girls name shortlist too along with (funnily enough) Frankie and James As well as last name first names for boys i also LOVE boys names for girls

I really like Harrison but it is the name of a friends son so might be a no no.

I like Hunter, Miller, Harrison and best of all Avery.
Be warned that MN in general frowns greatly upon this "surnames as first names" thing and would prefer that you called your baby Arlo or Sebastian.
Cameron means "crooked nose" if that makes a difference to you. ("Cam shrón")

Really don't like Blake, but I'm not sure why??

Baxter is the name of my dog so i definitely agree on it being a cool name but might raise some eyebrows if i chose to name my kid the same LOL

Disclaimer: I don't really like surname names (no reason, just me) so won't be coming up with further suggestions. But thought you might be interested in what a disliker has to say in your list

Jackson - OK
Hunter - I wouldn't in UK as association and political baggage of the vocabulary word are too high.
Carter - don't like
Avery - deatheater! it will be seen as a HP name
Baker - no, just doesn't work at all
Smith - don't like, but will be obvious that it's a transferred surname
Paxton - isn't this a brand name of stuffing and ready sauces?
Harrison - OK
Mason - Ok-ish

Sebastian is the name of my other dog so thats also a definite no no - and Arlo, seriously?? Wow.

Hunter is lovely, isn't it...i really like it but keep getting confused looks when i tell people!

Auntie thanks for that - must say i missed the deatheater connection, but still really love Avery. And yes, maybe Paxton isn't the best choice LOL

It's probably because they didn't realise you were in to bloodsports to that extent. And even those who are very anti will try to keep it buttoned in reference to a new baby.

Surnames as first names is very traditional though, isn't it? I'm always surprised at the mumsnet dislike of it. I know loads of elderly men with names like Thompson, Barkley, Jackson etc. Although those would all be eldest sons named after their mother or grandmother's surname. Maybe that's considered more acceptable?

I rather like Dexter.

Hunter is a pet name

Have met one adult hunter and he lived up to his name as he was extremely predatory with women.

The fact I dislike him obviously colours my view of the name though!

I like Avery best from the list. I know a Hudson and it's a nice name - although I don't think surname but river

I always though they were quite traditional too treacle and really didn't realise people had such a strong dislike to them until i asked for opinions LOL

Well so far, i think I've narrowed down my list to Avery, Hudson and Dexter for possible boys names to go with my girls list of Avery, Frankie and James

Still open to suggestions though...
