Hello all,

I'm trying to decide on boys names and really like the idea of using last names as first names.

So far i have shortlisted:

Jackson
Hunter
Carter
Avery
Baker
Smith
Paxton
Harrison
Mason

What do you think? Any other suggestions?

Avery reminds me of Greys Anatomy - and he's the hot one isn't he?

My pets are named after inanimate objects so definitely no surnames for that.

I know someone who gave their surname as their sons first name, as he had her partners surname (does that make sense?) I thought that was lovely and it really suits him

Just don't do like Beyoncé from Stella and name him Jackson Jackson!

HandbagsAndTheGladrags · 06/03/2016 09:38

Yes, i must confess to stealing Avery from a GA character...and yes he is indeed the very hot one!

LOL at Jackson Jackson Grin Unfortunately my fathers family are originally from Madagascar so my surname is very unusual for the UK - nothing sounds like it goes iyswim so I'm not even taking it into consideration!

Cameron isn't just a surname though, it's been used as a Scots first name for hundreds of years Confused

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 06/03/2016 09:42

As has Stewart and Grant or Russell or any other number of names.

ddeemummy · 06/03/2016 09:47

From your list Carter is my favourite although Harryson and Mason were on my list of names previously.

I also really like the name Lennon Smile

villainousbroodmare · 06/03/2016 09:55

Sure, all surnames were originally first names. Constructions like Robertson or O'Connell or MacGregor make it more apparent.

Issie339 · 06/03/2016 10:06

We have a DS due in a few weeks and like you quite like surnames as first names. Some that are on our shortlist that I don't think have been mentioned yet are

Lincoln
Grayson/Greyson
Nelson
Flynn (not sure if this is a surname but sounds like it could be!)
Fletcher

CraftySewNSew · 06/03/2016 10:19

Cameron is our current front runner, but I keep flip-flopping between that and a more traditional Scandi name (DH is Danish)

Mclaren37 · 06/03/2016 10:49

I really like Hudson, also Avery - what's a deatheater?
Other ideas;
Cameron
Archer
Edison
Cooper
Maxwell
Porter
Huxley
Lennon
Miller
Elliot
Ellison
Frazier
Hendrix
Logan
Jenson
Jacoby
Sawyer

Mclaren37 · 06/03/2016 11:03

Ps. Our son has my maiden name as part of his name. It is a very traditional way to name your son, especially in Scotland. My middle name is also my mother's maiden name. I have a friend with maiden name Lucas who has named her boy Lucas. There's another one :)

HandbagsAndTheGladrags · 06/03/2016 11:06

oooh...Hendrix is definitely going on the list! Thanks for that Mclaren

Ah now I was going to say an unusual surname would help. I taught a boy called Baker once who had an African surname and always thought his name worked really well.

HandbagsAndTheGladrags · 06/03/2016 12:34

Maybe my weird surname will work in my favour for once Grin

This thread is making me want more children! The names are fab!

mrsschu · 06/03/2016 14:01

Not a fan of surnames as first names so I can't offer any other suggestions (although I do like both Sebastian and Arlo Grin). Re. Avery, the first thing that springs to mind for me is Steven Avery from Making a Murderer, can't believe nobody else has made that link. For me the name has pretty shocking connotations and it's the first thing I'd think of if I met a child called Avery...

lo0ol · 06/03/2016 14:45

Some are fine, but surnames as names are quite American sounding. Fine if you're American or want to sound American.

EssentialHummus · 06/03/2016 14:56

Sounds American to me, but that's not necessarily a damning indictment. On the subject of indictments though Grin you may end up with a little law firm (that comment made me laugh - thinking of the firms I've worked at and wondering what MNers would think of a little Linklater, Norton or Cleary!).

Idontneedyourjudgement · 06/03/2016 15:17

I'm the same,ds is Miller and dd's middle name is Scott!(first name was nearly Parker but frankie had in a few weeks before for her son.
If I had another it would be Hunter

HandbagsAndTheGladrags · 06/03/2016 15:41

LOVE Scott as a middle name for a girl! My front runner for a girl atm is Frankie James Grin Miller is also super cute!

Having watch Making a Murderer i can honestly say that i have never made the connection! I actually stole the name from Greys Anatomy - Dr Jackson Avery.

Also really like Wilson but its my best friends last name so might be a little strange LOL

villainousbroodmare · 06/03/2016 16:13

Avery is Fern's brother in Charlotte's Web so for me it's all wholesome farm boy, suntanned legs, dusty haybarns, rope swings, cotton candy, county fair associations. Grin

BoGrainger · 06/03/2016 16:24

I went out with a Johnson Jones about 40 years ago. He had a brother called Dawson and I remember thinking how trendy and cool they were! Still like both those names

MNetter15 · 06/03/2016 16:28

DH has a friend whose sons are Logan and Brogan Confused

EmpressOfTheVulvaCupcakes · 06/03/2016 16:36

My first thought at Cameron is David.

Hunter might be different in the US but it makes me think of redneck twats grinning gormlessly over dead animals.
