What are your thoughts on Ellis for a girl?

I love the name as know a lovely lady of that name but sure how much that is skewing my judgement.

Failing that, Rowan?

I know a very pretty girl called Ellis and her name really suits her!

Having said that, my own Father's middle name was Ellis!

I intend to incorporate this into my baby girls name too but she will be "Elise" [Elees] =)

It isn't a name I would have thought of for a girl, but I taught one a few years ago and loved it so much as a girl's name that we considered it for DD. It's lovely, and works really well as a girl's name I think.

However, I very much feel Rowan is a boy's name. I have only ever known it to be a boy's name and it seems popular at the moment so I think people would presume.

What about Ellisa? Smile

Summ3r · 04/03/2016 13:37

Love it! My daughters friend is called Ellis x

lljkk · 04/03/2016 17:51

Wouldn't Ellisa spend her life saying "No really, I'm not Alicia, truly I'm not."

MamaLazarou · 04/03/2016 21:54

I love it. I know a very glamorous woman called Ellis and have often admired her name.

Sofiria · 05/03/2016 15:02

What about Elise?

My associations with Ellis are Ellis Bell and Ellis Island.

justlikeastar · 05/03/2016 19:40

I know two girls called Ellis. I think it's fabulous!

Quercus3 · 05/03/2016 20:02

I know a female Ellis - she isn't very pleasant so it's put me off!

Rowan is beautiful though

JennyOnAPlate · 05/03/2016 20:30

I know of one girl called Ellis but its hyphenated with an obviously female name (think Ellis-may)

I think it's a masculine sounding name. I'm not suggesting you hyphenate either btw!

xXjunebugXx · 07/03/2016 15:03

I know boys and girls called Ellis. It's lovely for both. Personally prefer it on a girl though. If you love it, go for it.

Paddletonio · 07/03/2016 21:28

Ellis and Rowan both great for a boy. Not keen for a girl.

powertotheparslaii · 07/03/2016 22:31

I knew a wonderful young woman called Ellis whose life was tragically cut far too short. It's a beautiful name for a girl

BigGlasses · 08/03/2016 11:56

I know 2 people called Ellis, one a 50 year old man, and the other a 9 year old girl. It's fine for a girl I think, not my taste but that is a personal thing

I know lots of Rowans. All female and all pronouced Rou -an. ou as in ouch (row as in have an argument). The only male Rowans that I know are the famous ones Rowan Williams and Aitkinson. They are pronouced differently Roe -an. oe as in toe/roe (row as in row your boat) I like Rowan for a girl, but then that is what I know and am used to. (Scottish)

Laurabeth94 · 09/03/2016 19:15

I have a little boy named Ellis, and personally I see it as a boys name because I've only ever known boys to be called Ellis but I'm sure it would make a lovely girls name too :)

BackforGood · 09/03/2016 19:38

Not for me - it's a boys name or a surname. Don't saddle her with it.

I also think of Rowan as a plant, but, if it is given to a person, then I would expect them to be a boy too.

stargirl1701 · 09/03/2016 19:42

I taught a wee girl Ellis. Delightful child.

Thisismybeauty · 09/03/2016 19:42

I don't like Rowan for boys at all. It sounds far too feminine.

It's my first name, and people really can't spell or pronounce it though.
