What are your thoughts on Ellis for a girl?

I love the name as know a lovely lady of that name but sure how much that is skewing my judgement.

Failing that, Rowan?

Alice or Alyce...

AStreetcarNamedBob · 03/03/2016 19:08

I think Ellis sounds similar to Elle or Elliott or Ellie all of which are girls names. I'd use it

ExplodingCarrots · 03/03/2016 19:48

I know of 2 Ellis'. One male and one female. I love the name for a girl.

DontKillMyVibe · 03/03/2016 20:58

I'd associate both names as boys names tbh. Had an ex-boyfriend called Rowan Grin

BeetlebumShesAGun · 03/03/2016 21:00

The only Ellis I have ever met was a girl and the only Rowan a boy Grin

I think both are lovely for a girl.

GooseberryRoolz · 03/03/2016 21:00

Another one here who immediately thought of Ellis Peters.

I really like it.

I like Rowan too.

Both lovely, but not too frilly names for a girl.

babyblabber · 03/03/2016 21:38

Have never heard it before but would present it's a boy. Elise is lovely and similar.

Rowanbyrn is most definitely a boy's name.

babyblabber · 03/03/2016 21:38

Rowan, weird autocorrect!

magpie17 · 03/03/2016 21:41

I know a female Ellis (love it!) and a male Rowan! I like both.

surroundedbyblondes · 03/03/2016 21:43

DD1 is Ella but I often use Ellis as a nickname. I love it!

Vixxfacee · 03/03/2016 21:47

Elise

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 03/03/2016 22:03

Isn't it Alise ? Sounds the same?

FedUpWithJudgementalPeople · 03/03/2016 23:56

Ellis is nice. Could also spell it Elice perhaps - seems more girly that way as similar to Alice.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/03/2016 00:05

Don't like Ellis for a girl.

Only Rowan I've met irl is female though.

StreetCar are you American? Elliott has never been considered a girls name in the UK Confused

Izzyathome · 04/03/2016 06:21

Haha you do know you're on mumsnet right?! No unisex names and nothing outside of the top 100 please!Grin I think Ellis is really lovely for a girl. The word sounds elegant and feminine to me. I like Rowan too, I know two female Rowans, one is a Scottish cousin. (Definitely sp. Rowan as in the Rowan tree. Not Rowanne which looks a bit naff to me, like the origin has been misunderstood ).

AStreetcarNamedBob · 04/03/2016 06:53

alis no British born and bred. Elliot is like Hilary/Evelyn/Ashley I believe. Unisex but most people associate it in their head with one sex.

Google Elliot as a girls name there are plenty. Google Thomas as a girls name and there are none. Definitely not making it up Smile

redexpat · 04/03/2016 06:57

The only Ellis I have ever 'known' is Dr Ellis Grey in Grey's Anatomy. She was definitely a woman.Never met one in real life though.

BalaBot · 04/03/2016 07:24

I'll take elegant and feminine thanks izzy Smile

I know it's not for some but think I'm sold. I missed a trick with DS and how his name is often pronounced (not some weird spelling we'd created) and don't want to saddle another child with an irritating mix up. I have one with my name and although not a big deal it's a pain correcting people or then not bothering and being called the wrong name!

On Ellis Peters, the write deliberately chose a male pseudonym.

Like George Elliot, and probably a nod to Emily from Acton, Currer and Ellis Bell.

elevenweekstogo · 04/03/2016 07:32

Have known one male and one female Ellis. Lovely name - go for it!

HortonWho · 04/03/2016 07:32

Love it. Wish I could use it Envy

Tuiles · 04/03/2016 07:34

I only know 2 female Ellis'

More male Rowans but 1 female.

Both lovely names

FlysInDreams · 04/03/2016 07:35

Yep, Ellis Peters was a pseudonym of Edith Pargeter.

Pollyputhtekettleon · 04/03/2016 07:42

Ellis is lovely and strong. U usual but has a traditional feel to it. Go for it.

waxweasel · 04/03/2016 08:20

I like it, and I don't normally go for that sort of unisex name. DD has a key worker at nursery called Ellis and she's awesome - early 20s, really switched on and full of character. It really suits her - it seems quite a sparky, feisty girl's name to me.
