Victorian baby name list....

With the current trend for Victorian names I've found a list of the 1,000 most common names in 1890...

A lot could be found in today's version of the list but still a few that haven't yet come back...what are your favourites and predictions of the ones which will never come back?

Quite a few boy's names in the girl's list: Leo, Fred, Walter?

I've never heard of them usages as girl's names so maybe a wrong entry?

I can't see Bertha making a come back any time soon! Or Edna. But other than that you'd barely notice the difference from now.

NadiaWadia · 12/02/2016 11:35

Gertrude is the worst!

I like a lot of those names!

I'm not sure Gertrude will come back in...

Lightbulbon · 12/02/2016 11:39

Some surprises there!

I don't think John for a girl will come back!

I'm surprised some names thought of as trendy such a Stella were popular then.

squoosh · 12/02/2016 11:40

I like Carrie (no.40), Lena (no.48) and Maggie (no.68) but if they was suggested on MN there'd be lots of stern calls for a 'proper name' to give 'options' Wink

squoosh · 12/02/2016 11:41

Mina (no.279) is nice and doesn't sound too Victorian.

squoosh · 12/02/2016 11:42

What about Floyd for a boy? Is that due a comeback?

Thurlow · 12/02/2016 11:47

It's worrying how many of those names are on our shortlist for future DC - John and Margaret(Maggie) being the front runners.

Oh well. If future DC ever end up travelling back in time to the Victorian era at least they'd not have to change their name!

MackerelOfFact · 12/02/2016 12:05

I can't see Orange, Lemon, Gay, Boss, Pleas or Concepcion coming back!

It's an American list and it's quite interesting to see that even then, names over there had distinct 'flavour' compared to British names.

Bloody love some of them though - Lemuel, Clarence, Mittie, Claribel.

stumblymonkey · 12/02/2016 12:50

There were quite a few names that I completely assumed were modern names: Mercedes, Crystal, Zena

The names of all my grandparents, my parents, my sister and her children are on there, as well as my name and the names of both my children! So I'm not sure how 'Victorian' the names are, just classic names really that are neither in fashion nor out of it.

Having said that, I can't see Mildred coming back anytime soon!

Here is a British list (England and Wales) for 1890 to compare it to:

Bloody hell, very very similar to nowadays! Although perhaps not Hyman for a boy...

Mina was probably short for Wilhelmina

CityFox · 12/02/2016 18:43

Mins was also a character in Bram Stoker's Dracula.

CityFox · 12/02/2016 18:43

*Mina

stumblymonkey · 12/02/2016 20:52

My 94 year old Nan is called Madge. Originally it was a diminutive of Margaret but then became a name in its own right

Gosh some are so ugly I can't see them coming back. Gertrude, Stella Confused

stumblymonkey · 12/02/2016 21:00

Stella did have a bit of a moment in the 90's didn't it...when Stella McCartney was in the media a lot?

IoraRua · 12/02/2016 21:04

Stella is back in my area, I know a lot of little Stellas!
