Victorian baby name list....

With the current trend for Victorian names I've found a list of the 1,000 most common names in 1890...

A lot could be found in today's version of the list but still a few that haven't yet come back...what are your favourites and predictions of the ones which will never come back?

Stella is lovely and Gertrude definitely isn't! (Besides, it has the word 'rude' in it).

Very different types of names, how on earth can you bracket them together?

My grandmother was called Gertrude maud.

Oh thank you!! I am reading a series of books set in the 1860s and very surprised by some of the names used as I didn't think they'd be used at that time period but your list proves me wrong!

Haha no please insult away! Known as both gert, gertie and Gertrude depending on who she was with.

Well I suppose Gertie is not too bad. It's the 'rude' bit that is the real killer! Your poor grandmother. No doubt her parents thought it was lovely at the time, though.

My DS is called the Scottish version of Earl. I met a Eugene recently and someone on here was asking opinions on Chester (funnily enough some people on that thread were saying they didn't like the modern trend for surnames as first names)

My grandmother's were Ida, Madge, Gladys and Mabel. All pretty horrible!

I quite like the sound of Stella but wouldn't because of the lager...

Also we have a very plain surname and so it would sound very odd together.

I LOVE the name Chester. I didn't realise that people would think it was a 'new' name...it was very popular in the 1920's.

I give my cats old fashioned names that I love: Mia, Nancy and Chester.
