I'm not pregnant but be decided it's my name of choice if I ever conceive another girl

My DCs are Padraig, Jacinta, Xavier and Romilly.

Am I right to earmark Ariel for future usage?

Ariel as in non bio wash powder? Erm... No, sorry it's not for me, reminds me of soap powder.

LittleBearPad · 23/12/2015 00:12

Or a mermaid. I wouldn't.

eastwest · 23/12/2015 00:17

I would love to love this name, but I'm afraid washing powder has spoiled it for me too. Sad

eastwest · 23/12/2015 00:18

How about Miranda instead?

MissAlabamaWhitman · 23/12/2015 00:40

Em no....

Ariel as in 'the tempest'

And I see where you're going with Miranda but no, not for me.

Little mermaid and the washing powder would ruin it for me

Burgatroyd · 23/12/2015 10:17

Its lovely

Raeray · 23/12/2015 10:22

I love it too.
There was a character on the programme medium with this name and I always liked it!

BettyOctopus · 23/12/2015 10:31

Isn't it traditionally a boys name?

Fourormore · 23/12/2015 10:33

Too much The Little Mermaid for me.

TheTravellingLemon · 23/12/2015 10:35

It's a boy's name really. The feminine has an 'a' at the end.

Chopz · 23/12/2015 10:35

Aurora

miniswin · 23/12/2015 10:40

What about Arielle, or Ariella, or Aurelia?

Sophronia · 23/12/2015 12:38

The Ariel I know is male. I prefer Arielle or Ariella for a girl.

MajesticSeaFlapFlap · 23/12/2015 12:41

Washing powder was my first thought too

EmpressOfTheVulvaCupcakes · 23/12/2015 12:44

Problem is, most people wouldn't think of Ariel in The Tempest, they would go straight to Little Mermaid & washing powder. Or even aerials.

In theory yes, in practice... that's different.

Fatfreefaff · 23/12/2015 12:55

I was thinking of using it but was going to spell it arialle or something like that to avoid the teasing. There was an Israeli girl at nursery with a similar name but not sure how they spelt it - pronounced Ari-ahl.

smartyclogs · 23/12/2015 13:27

I used to work with a guy from the Phillipines called Ariel.

Actually I know quite a few people from the Phillipines with great names, I guess their parents really didn't care at all what other people thought.
Ariel, Beethoven, Ulysses, Girlie, and Gay.

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 23/12/2015 13:32

It's lovely for a boy - but it is a boy's name.

LibraryMonster · 23/12/2015 17:56

Me and DH really like it for a boy, but I can't bring myself to use it because of all the reasons mentioned above Sad

Sofiria · 23/12/2015 19:15

I really like Ariel with a short /a/ as a boy's name. With the long a it's all Little Mermaid for me, unfortunately.

eastwest · 23/12/2015 20:48

Yes... I knew it was from TT but the connection with washing powder is too strong I'm afraid.

eastwest · 23/12/2015 20:50

Or Ariel Sharon is the other one. not the greatest of associations.
Ariel and Isis are two of my favourite names, just going on the sound and look of them. Pity about world politics.

Leigh1980 · 23/12/2015 20:58

I love that name. I love mermaids and I live by the ocean which I love. I didn't even think of the washing powder at all. It's one of my favourite names. If I have a girl that's what I'd call her.

Scarydinosaurs · 23/12/2015 21:24

Definitely a boy's name.

Ariella is pretty- is this definitely a bonafide name? I'd add it to me short list if it is.
