Adrian - thoughts?

This is not really a contender I don't think but DH mentioned it when we were initially talking about names and for some reason I can't get it out of my head. Initially I hated it - reminds me Adrian Mole, but I'm wondering if it is a good, solid name for a boy and a man?

Surname is very, very common so we are looking for something not over used, but not made up. We live in the Central Belt in Scotland and quite like surnamey, Scottish, or historical saints type names.

Is it awful? Are my hormones frying my brain? Blush

Adrian Mole!
But then I can actually see it working as a solid Scot name so I kind of get where you are coming from. (Disclaimer: never actually been to Scotland).
But then Ade Edmonson is quite cool!

I love it, but then the 2 loves of my life are called Adrian (Adrian mole and my lovely DP) so I guess I'm biased.

It's quite dated. Aidan or Hayden are very similar and probably more of the moment.

I can't get over Adrian Mole.

But I suppose that most of your DCs peers won't be aware of Adrian Mole.

Sorry but I think it's dreadful, perhaps not helped by the fact that, had I been a boy, I would probably have been called it.

I think the Adrian Mole connection is largely made by 40 somethings (I saw him first frickadela). I like it though, but prefer Aidan.

It was my late brothers name. If I have a DS (due in 6 weeks) then it'll be a 3rd name in commemoration of him but I wouldn't choose it otherwise. It's very 1960's/70's much like my own name.

I didn't know it was Scottish - all the Adrians I know are Welsh.

Personally I hate it, it sounds like nasty, scrawny, vicious little boy (disclaimer: my brother was bullied by an Adrian which may have coloured my view - I'm sure there are plenty of nice ones out there!)

I love Adrian. I think it's a very cool name (possibly it used to be seen as nerdy because of Adrian Mole).

I know a young Hadrian, which I think is a bit nicer.

Hadrian (an ancient Roman name) was the original version of Adrian. Adrian is a perfectly good name, but I rather prefer Hadrian, too.

There are several different saints named Adrian/Hadrian, including one from Scotland, St Adrian of May. The first St Adrian/Hadrian was a Roman soldier, d AD 306. The others were mostly named after him.

HOWEVER, many stories told about the so-called 'Dark Ages' were invented later, and may not be true. Missionaries and traders travelled to and fro between southern/western Scotland and Ireland in St Adrian's time; there were close contacts between costal lands on either side of the sea. The Isle of May is certainly a fascinating place; St Adrian certainly knew how to choose a wild, remote, romantic site!

My dad is Adrian and is very stable, an excellent provider and a good solid man. Although he has very little empathy. He's definitely not scrawny, in fact he resembles a big hairy gorilla Grin

I prefer it to Aidan which is v popular.

I prefer adrienne, girls name tho, but I'd always say that in the 'rocky' voice.

Mole to me as well tho it's a good point that it's our (30+) generation that will think so.

Thanks for all the responses! Like I say, probably not a true contender but it has just been a surprising lesson in dismissing a name which has then really grown on me over the months!

If going for a historical Scottish Saint I really want Kentigern... DH not sure as a first name but maybe in the middle somewhere just for the sheer hell of it Smile
