My dad LOVES this name. I don't mind it but not sure on it as a name.

It suits a labrador beautifully. I wouldn't use it for a person.

Where I come from, especially amongst the older generation, gypsy often used as a term of abuse (along with pikey and gyppo). Not pc but true.

I think the name SOUNDS lovely and it conjures up an image of, well, a gypsy - in floaty lacey clothes, big brown eyse and gold hoop earrings. Which is a nice image for me. Sadly, other people might not see it that way, and for that reason i'd not use it.

I used to know a Jack Russell Terrier named Gypsy, she was a lovely little cantankerous thing. Unfortunately I think it's not a great name for a child; my parents were boho hippies in the 1970s and I would HATE it if my name reflected that, as I'm the least boho person you could imagine.

Very un PC (or 'offensive', if you'd prefer a different word). Gypsy and Traveller communities still face huge and devastating prejudice in the UK and Europe today, and the storybook idea of a gypsy bears little resemblance to people's actual lived experience. Sorry :/

If you like it, use it. I know one Gypsy and l was a bit about it at first but it suits her now.

Lovely name for a dog/pony, dreadful for a child. Not far off calling the kid golliwog (to a lot of people) and leaving them open to a lot of potential hassle in a few years. Just don't!

Well, would you consider naming your child after any other marginalised group which suffers ongoing prejudice, has low life expectancy and low levels of literacy, and whose lives are regularly depicted on television to give the middle classes a laugh and a shudder of disgust?

If we take the Chalet School as a model for naming policy, we will also be naming our daughters Bernhilda, Dickie, and Mary-Lou. Not to mention Len and Con. (Who are two thirds of an exquisitely pretty set of triplets in the Chalet School world, but whose names (admittedly short for Helena and Constance, though they never use the full names) always remind me of the two thieves who try to steal the fine prize cow in What the Ladybird Heard.)
