My dad LOVES this name. I don't mind it but not sure on it as a name.

Nice? Awful? Politically incorrect??

Siblings would be molly and Connor

Sorry Strawberry I was referring to the Cher song. I didn't mean that travelers are tramps or thrives

Well I never heard that one Shock I correct myself to 'I can't believe Cher sang that Shock ' then Smile

I knew a little girl called Romany once. Not sure where the PC brigade stand on that one, but it did suit her.

At least there's scope to change it to Romilly when she's older without too much upheaval, I suppose.

Also there was a character in Home And Away years ago called Gypsy, and she was fucking annoying. I wouldn't choose it for that reason alone! Grin

Molly and Connor are so nice. Gypsy is terrible for all sorts of reasons.

No. Not a good choice.

It's awful.

Terrible name. Definitely one of Cher-influenced triplets.
I did know a 'Roma', years ago, which would have a similar meaning today.

Someone's not a Cher fan Grin

Keep your knickers on Strawberry, Ginger was referring to the song.

OP, No, it's bloody awful. Pick another name.

Horrible children would call people gypsy or pikey as an insult in my school. You can't inflict a child with that name.

Report
thegiddylimit · 08/12/2015 17:03

Never for a child. An old name for an animal but not one I'd consider now because of the possibility for offence.

Rawnie and Tawnie are old names used in the traveller community though. I knew a Rawnie once

Makes me think of the stripper Gypsy Rose Lee

Unless you have triplets and name the other two tramp and thief it's a no.

Ginger I can't believe you said that Shock

Dreadful and probably offensive to travelling communities. And imagine the grief she would get later on in life from horrid little boys and girls in the school playground.

(and all little boys and girls can be horrid on occasion!)

Well, would you consider naming your child after any other marginalised group which suffers ongoing prejudice, has low life expectancy and low levels of literacy, and whose lives are regularly depicted on television to give the middle classes a laugh and a shudder of disgust?

If we take the Chalet School as a model for naming policy, we will also be naming our daughters Bernhilda, Dickie, and Mary-Lou. Not to mention Len and Con. (Who are two thirds of an exquisitely pretty set of triplets in the Chalet School world, but whose names (admittedly short for Helena and Constance, though they never use the full names) always remind me of the two thieves who try to steal the fine prize cow in What the Ladybird Heard.)
