Help, nameless week old boy!

Our little man is now a week old and we cannot pin down a name! We are thinking of Evan or Fergus at the moment. I'm worried Fergus will become Fungus at school, DH thinks Evan is a bit dull. Any preferences or other ideas? I have Irish parents so Irish names are a possibility. looking for something a bit unusual but not too wacky.

Do you mind me asking if you live in Scotland? I'm assuming from your post that you don't live in Ireland. I am scottish, currently living in England, but I know of a few little boys called Fergus who live up in Scotland and I haven't heard of them having any problems getting called Fungus. Might be less likely to happen in Scotland (or Ireland) though as the name is more familiar than in other parts of the UK. An Irish name which I think is lovely is Malachy. It might not be to your taste but I think it's gorgeous, just incase it hasn't crossed your mind yet! Congratulations on the birth of your baby boy x

These are the easy ones that most people can say & spell no matter where you are (I assume).

Irish names IMO are lovely because of their meaning as much as their sound.

I like both Evan and Fergus and hadn't thought of "fungus". I don't think of Evan as dull.

The Fergus I know is the most gentle, kind hearted soul.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We do live in England. I was all set on Evan before he was born but maybe he looks more like Fergus, something to do with him being bigger and chunkier than I expected! We had to cancel our registry office appointment today after I had a panic about the fungus / bullying thing, maybe it's hormones!!

Please go with Evan! It's a lovely name and is underused :)

I know a Fergus [grown man] who is mostly called Ferg or Gussy but he is also called Fungus occasionally

With Irish roots ds would have tadgh (pronounced tige) but you will struggle with spelling and pronunciation in England I think... Still love it though!!

to be honest if kids at school want to tease you they will find something to tease you over no matter what your name is.

How about Ferdinand shortened to Ferdie? I hate Evan (sounds like a girls' name to me). I like Fergus or Feargal. No Irish but Freddie is nice too, as is William.

I love Evan, personally, but if it doesn't "look" right for your little one, then pick something else. We changed from the front-runner name for both.
