Eli and Aphra. Ttc will commence shortly (sorry tmi) I have a few ideas for a girl but way too many for a boy!

Please help me narrow the, down! My taste tends to be a bit marmite. I want something quirky but not batshit crazy! Preference would be not to start with an A or E or end in and I or A though you will see I break my own rules.

Asa
Ezra
Rex
Jude
Jedediah (nn Jed or Jedi)
Josiah
Jonah
Ace
Kit
Wilder
Sonny
Cassius (love)

Rex - love
Jude - love
Jedediah (nn Jed or Jedi) - Jed is okay Jedi is not unless you want him pestered with Star Wars gags.
Josiah - no
Jonah - no
Ace - NO
Kit - love
Wilder - NO
Sonny - no
Cassius (love) - love

Love Josiah. How about Jeremiah, Jem for short?

PeasinPod1 · 22/09/2015 13:12

LOVE: Rex (adore this name, such a grower) and Jude.

AuntieStella · 22/09/2015 13:18

Asa - OK but agree too many vowels to make this a presence in this sib set
Ezra - ditto
Rex - OK
Jude - like. Are you OK with unisex names?
Jedediah (nn Jed or Jedi) - lovely (but not Jedi, even if you go to Star Wars conventions)
Josiah - lovely
Jonah - not keen
Ace - very Jilly Cooper
Kit - love it
Wilder - no. People will see the comparative adjective
Sonny - no, though could be nn for just about anything
Cassius (love) - lovely

RedToothBrush · 22/09/2015 15:26

You have two names of Hebrew origin there. Which I do feel paints you into a bit of a corner.

For me that means that Rex, Ace, Kit, Wilder, Sonny & Cassius don't fit even though I am a big fan of a few of them.

Asa and Ezra are two of my absolute favourite boys names. BUT again they don't go with your previous two names as they are too similar starting with AND ending with similar sounds to your other two (and probably one of the reasons you are drawn to them in the first place).

Which leaves Jude, Jedediah (nn Jed or Jedi), Josiah & Jonah which are all in the same vein and obvious start with J.

Jude is probably the 'trendy/cool' one of the 4. Josiah and Jonah are a bit fusty for my taste. Jedediah though because you can do more with it, escapes some of that fustiness whilst retaining its original charm

Reuben, Amos, Solomon, Nathaniel, Seth, Levi, Phineas? I'd say Ezekiel & Abel at a push too. I am fond of Kane (with the none biblical spelling and negative association) too, but I fear that could be an issue.

JanuaryJuniper · 22/09/2015 19:02

redtoothbrush your process of elimination and thought process is exactly what makes sense to me, yet my heart still loves all the names that don't necessarily "fit" yet I'm also obsessed with having a set of names that "flow"....aaahhh!

I like some of your suggestions!

Do you really think day to day people would really notice if a third sibling had a non Hebrew non biblical name, if the overall sound "goes"?

For example I think Eli, Aphra & Rex sound and look lovely together, I also think the same for Eli, Aphra & Cassius! Hmm

Actually moSt people I meet seem to think Aphra is an Gaelic name or just have never heard of it, let alone realise it's Hebrew!

Kit goes well.

PontyGirl · 22/09/2015 19:06

Kit is a fantastic name

Nataleejah · 22/09/2015 19:59

Ezra or Jed

TheUrbaneFox · 22/09/2015 20:41

Afric is an Irish name. I know one. I also know an Aphra.

Even though I know Aphra isn't Irish, in my head it goes with Diarmuid or Oisin.

TheUrbaneFox · 22/09/2015 20:42

Saul would go well with Eli and Aphra

KLou1105 · 22/09/2015 21:37

Rex or Jude :)

RedToothBrush · 22/09/2015 21:54

You might get away with a non-Hebrew name. It depends. Those combinations sound right together if you don't know the origin. But if you do know the origin it does seem odd.

I guess it depends on who you mix with and whether that would ultimately bother you.

JillBYeats · 22/09/2015 21:57

Kit - for a boy or a girl.

horsewalksintoabar · 22/09/2015 22:03

What's with the heavy Bible names? Are you quite religious?

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 22/09/2015 22:06

Asa - not with the names you already have.
Ezra - ditto.
Rex - is a dog.
Jude - lovely.
Jedediah (nn Jed or Jedi) - Jed is good. Jedi is not good.
Josiah - lovely.
Jonah - not terrible, but not great. I think you have nicer names on your list.
Ace - no, it's not really a name.
Kit - lovely.
Wilder - no, just no.
Sonny - see Jonah.
Cassius (love) - lovely.

So if I was choosing from your list I would go for either Jude, Kit or Cassius.

InternationalEspionage · 22/09/2015 22:07

Xenon

cariadisnaehappy · 22/09/2015 22:18

Zachary (nn Zac)
Seth
Reuben
Malachi
Caleb
Micha
Noah

JanuaryJuniper · 22/09/2015 22:32

I think Cassius, Kit or Rex are probably my favourite!

I like the suggestion of Saul upthread.

For the poster who asked what's with the overly religious names, er I can't give a better answer other than I just like the names (though one of my degrees is in theology)

Wearyheadedlady · 23/09/2015 00:42

I like Rex and Kit. Cassius is lovely but for me there is only one, Cassius Clay (Mohammed Ali).

Saul is good. How about Otis or Axel (probably too Scandinavian)

Fridgedooropen · 23/09/2015 00:47

Kit, definitely. A one syllable name sounds good as the last in a list of names, too.

Laliberty · 23/09/2015 04:47

I really like Cassius from your list, but do you think the Cass-e-us vrs Cash-us pronunciation debate or Cassius Clay association would be bothersome?

JanuaryJuniper · 23/09/2015 08:57

laliberty we would use the Cass ee us pronunciation, I suppose it could be an issue, though I guess most people will only need to be corrected once, but it could become bothersome regularly having to explain to people which pronunciation!

I like both Otis and Axel, but they don't quite fit for me.
