Am thinking waaaay ahead (good thing I'm not superstitious!) but what do you think of this? I think it's Welsh. Could be Mags for short?

Honestly sounds like a mash up of magpie and gwen

Snossidge · 15/09/2015 13:38

I've never heard of it.

Bloodonthedanceflower · 15/09/2015 13:40

It sounds like a dippy old lady character in a purple skirt from a crappy children's book or TV series.

It's vile.

Janeymoo50 · 15/09/2015 13:40

It sounds witchy - not sure I like it.

squoosh · 15/09/2015 13:41

It it a real name? Is it Welsh?

My first thought was Magwitch from Great Expectations. He's a great character and I do like him but......

Magwen for a girl?
waxweasel · 15/09/2015 15:11

I'm Welsh and have never heard it.

It's also really, really, really ugly. Agree with PPs it makes me think of gnarled old witches.

Chillyegg · 15/09/2015 15:20

Sorry sounds made up and both me and dd have very unusual names

DandyDan · 15/09/2015 15:36

Either Magwitch from GE or Magua from Last of the Mohicans: not brilliant associations either of them.

If you like Mags as the nickname, go with Margaret or Marguerite, or Margot maybe.

TwmSionCati · 15/09/2015 15:37

really really horrible, sounds like Magwitch.
What about Tanwen? That means 'White fire' and is v pretty.
I am not sure but Magwen sounds made up.

Flumplet · 15/09/2015 15:59

Sorry OP I was thinking of Magwitch too. Not keen, but as someone else has said Tanwen is a bit prettier.

SmugairleRoin · 15/09/2015 16:53

It seems very witchy. It sort of reminds me of Magret (think that was the spelling), a Terry Pratchett witch.

Tanwen is lovely though.

squoosh · 15/09/2015 17:02

I like Tanwen too. Sounds like the name of a hippy herbalist.

So more a white witch!

waxweasel · 15/09/2015 17:13

I know a Tanwen. She is infinitely embarrassed by her name and goes by Tani, and generally never ever ever says what it's short for :)

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 15/09/2015 18:48

I think it's the type of name you have to have s connection with for example you would have to be Welsh for your child to carry it off. Yes I suppose it would look nice on a sweet Welsh little girl, but other than that, if you don't have that connection then. IMO it's being something you're not sorry. But of course it's your choice so if you do decide to use it, be prepared for all the questions such as the measning and how abd why you chose it. Therefore be sure to research the name in full detail

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 15/09/2015 18:51

If you are looking for Welsh names. Just to give you other ideas
Rhiannon
Anwen
Arianwen
Nia
Cerys

SuckingEggs · 15/09/2015 18:52

It's bloody awful.

MrsLeighHalfpenny · 15/09/2015 18:57

It's not Welsh. And its awful. Is it from something like LOTR?

MothershipG · 15/09/2015 19:00

I like it! Grin

How about Tegwyn?

Hellochicken · 15/09/2015 19:06

Really awful name, sorry

Anwen
Bronwyn
Megan
Manon

All of these I like, I'm not often negative but magwen sounds awful/ made up

SuckingEggs · 15/09/2015 19:14

^^ those are nice

Penfold007 · 15/09/2015 19:16

Magwen is the trading name of a German valve making company not a name. There are many beautiful Welsh names to choose from.

Doublebubblebubble · 15/09/2015 20:08

It reminded me of magwitch too. Sorry op I normally just say go with what you like but I think that would be a bit too much...

Why not Margaret?? That can be shortened to Mags xx

Sophronia · 15/09/2015 21:13

How about Morwen or Morwenna instead?

TwmSionCati · 15/09/2015 23:34

or Morgana

VimFuego101 · 15/09/2015 23:37

I thought Magwitch too!
