Boys Names - Unusual but not Weird?

Hello! DH & I have discussed names on and off since long before we decided to start trying, and have about a zillion girls names to choose from, but we struggle with names for a boy.

My absolute all time favourite doesn't go with our surname at all, his favourite is far too wacky, and another few have already been 'taken' by family or close friends.

It seems most names I suggest DH can come up with someone we know/knew/have heard of who isn't a nice guy!

So far I have a few on a shortlist that neither of us actually hate. Any opinions?

Ansel
Arlo
Cole
Sebastian
Ethan (but begins with same letter as our surname. His initials would forever remind me of Kevin Bacon [hmmm]

We're in the same position as you October, names that one or other of us like but nothing that we both love, and DS2 is now imminent!

FWIW I like Ansel best of your list - Arlo and Sebastian both nice but they are getting popular, certainly round here at least! Cole makes me think of one of the ninjago ninjas I'm afraid, the perils of having a Lego obsessed son already...

OctoberCupcake · 09/09/2015 13:35

Thanks! Ansel is my favourite too. (we're both fans of Ansel Elgort from The Fault In Our Stars).

Cole came from a book I read recently, and reinforced by seeing Zac Efrons latest film where he's also Cole! Blush

I like Ansel the best too.

Pipilangstrumpf · 09/09/2015 14:20

Ansel is a great name! It is the best of your list imo.

OctoberCupcake · 09/09/2015 14:22

Thanks Ladies :D

Ansel reminds me of Ansel Adams, no bad thing. People might think it's 'ansel as in 'ansel 'n' Gretel. Aside from that I quite like it.

OctoberCupcake · 09/09/2015 15:01

Ha ha, I actually don't mind 'Hansel' either so that's no major issue.

There isn't really an accent where we live, most people are pretty well spoken (except for me, I moved here from the North), so I don't think it would sound too much like a dropped 'H' Grin

I like Arlo but with names that begin with 'Ar' I sometimes think people are being lazy and dropping the 'H' which would make it 'Harlow' - also a nice name but a girls name for me.

Cole is also nice from your list.

How about Theo, Mylo or Lyle? I also saw Tate on here which I thought was lovely!

MarySmilingAndHerBrassieres · 09/09/2015 15:12

Cole is lovely.

fairy, any chance you're a sugar fan favouring Tate and Lyle? Wink

OctoberCupcake · 09/09/2015 15:18

I really like Theo too Fairy, but I'm not sure DH is as keen! Tate & Lyle (even separately, remind me too much of sugar) Grin

Love love love your names.

I think we have very similar taste. I also love Tristan, Byron and Jago.

EElisavetaOfBelsornia · 09/09/2015 15:31

Harlow? Reminds me of Margot Asquith explaining the spelling of her name to Jean Harlow - "the T is silent, like in Harlow" Grin

rosieliveson1 · 09/09/2015 15:33

From your list I like Cole.

A few suggestions
Clark
Theo
Joel

squoosh · 09/09/2015 15:33

Brilliantly bitchy! I love it Grin

fairyfeatures · 09/09/2015 15:37

I am very sweet so this must be my drawing to Tate & Lyle Mary & October Wink

Sorry EE - I have no idea what you are talking about! I only heard Harlow through a baby in our village being called it. Nice but also not for me.

Clark is nice Rosie

CakeRattleandRoll · 09/09/2015 16:39

Ansel. Definitely.

cornishglos · 09/09/2015 19:05

Um, Ansel makes me think of Anusol piles cream...

BikeRunSki · 09/09/2015 19:08

I like Ansel. Ethan is not at all unusual!

TravellingToad · 09/09/2015 19:11

John.

Despite what people think it's very rare. Not even top 100!

OctoberCupcake · 09/09/2015 19:14

cornishglos; I have never heard of that, so it doesn't particularly worry me!

BikeRunSki; I know Ethans' not an unusual one, I just threw it in there as an afterthought Grin

Soren reminds me of malt loaf though... Hmm

Rivercam · 09/09/2015 19:52

Blake
Fergus
Blair
Douglas
Hugo
Cuthbert
Julius
Lloyd
Conrad
Conner

OctoberCupcake · 09/09/2015 19:59

NoMoreRenting - We have a Riley in the family (female), a colleague just had a Rowan and Brodie reminds me of the Kardashians half bro (not that I watch that nonsense. ever. honest).

Rivercam I like Hugo & Leo :)
