Clement, Clarence, Roscoe or Gilbert?

We are totally settled on Astrid if we have a daughter, LOVE IT! but a little confused for a boy. We always had Roscoe in mind way before I was ever pregnant but since being pregnant have come up with a few others. Gilbert, my husband like Gil and I like Bert as nick names, worried child will have 2 diff nicknames! Also like Clarence, Roscoe and Clement, Florian is an outside possibility too. Any thoughts?

I love Gilbert and Clement, also like Clemence. I like Florian - what would you use as a nn? To be how at I think Roscoe is my least favourite, but I don't actively dislike it...

Love Astrid!

Laquila · 27/08/2015 13:26

How at = honest

ammature · 27/08/2015 13:29

Think Gilbert would be Gil or Bertie, Clancy and Clem or Clemmie, my issue is a don't like Ross for Roscoe at all... Florian i think could make it as a middle name, worried its a little too feminine.

Ghastly ????

Tiggeryoubastard · 27/08/2015 13:32

They're all really bad. Honestly. Drippy, just ugly sounding. And yes, Roscoe is the worst. It isn't even a name.
Hope it's a girl, Astrid is ok.

Laquila · 27/08/2015 13:33

Also not keen on Ross...love Clem though. I agree you'd probably have to be a strong character to get away wih Florian! Is Florin a variant or have I made it up?

I know a lovely Gilbert nn Gib.

ammature · 27/08/2015 13:34

Wow. Do you speak to people like that in real life?

OP posts:
Pickedmypoison · 27/08/2015 13:34

Joke names, all of them. Gilbert is really awful.

I don't understand why anyone would pick such old-fashioned wet names.

I think some mumsnetters must live in a completely different world from me and my family and friends.

Will your child be going to the local comp? You're setting him up if so,

ammature · 27/08/2015 13:37

Frankly I think ill ask for my thread to be deleted since really feel like having my name choices for my baby fucking slated. What exactly does wet mean? Clement was a fucking Prime Minster FGS Hmm

villainousbroodmare · 27/08/2015 13:40

That's the dampest set of names I've ever heard, imo. I thought the only possible option for a strong solid name was Ross for Roscoe, so am very amused to hear that you don't like it.
Our tastes are utterly different. Grin
Do you like Rupert? Cuthbert? Bertram? Percy? Tristam?

Astrid is really lovely - to me it has an air of outdoorsy healthy Nordic competence and as such could not be more different from the boys' selection which speak to me of mildewed books and perpetually dripping noses.

BitandBot · 27/08/2015 13:41

Why ask for an opinion if you don't really want one?

ammature · 27/08/2015 13:42

villainousbroodmare we like Bertrand but have a long winded surname so sounds too posh, Also like Percy, Percival. Not into the others but thats for the suggestion.

Laquila · 27/08/2015 13:42

Interestingly, Roscoe was more popular in 2014 than any of the others, according to the ONS.

No, I wouldn't have called Clement Atlee wet either. The Gilbert I know did go to the local comp and has shockingly managed just fine. He's a builder - is that normal enough, Poison? ;)

TheVeryHungryPreggo · 27/08/2015 13:43

I like Clement, I know a couple of lovely Clems.

Clarence is too feminine, Roscoe's only modern link is to the Dukes of Hazzard, so I wouldn't. He is the laughing stock.

Gilbert is a bit of a dad-name, but there was Gilbert Blythe who was a bit of all right. So I'm not as opposed to it as I might otherwise be.

Very unusual choices, OP. Still, it would be a dull world if we were all alike! There's only so many Olivers, Harrys and Lily-Roses this world can take without something to liven us up a bit! Thanks to you for keeping life interesting!

EmzDisco · 27/08/2015 13:43

OP I have one of your names on my shortlist!

Clarence in True Romance is far from wet, and I know a v v cool Roscoe who DJs, amongst other things, v talented guy

I think some people live in teeny little worlds tbh, so if they don't have direct experience of something they don't like it and get the fear

Squooshed · 27/08/2015 13:43

Come on OP. You can't ask opinions about a pretty niche set of names and not expect some pretty honest/vigorous replies.

Better to hear them now rather than when little Clement or Clarence is toddling around.

p.s Being a PM does not guard against being wet. John Major. Nuff said.

ammature · 27/08/2015 13:44

Good point BitandBot, I have no problem with people saying they don't like the names we have chosen but dampest, wet, joke names, ghastly, drippy, and ugly seems a bit much in about 5 minutes.

OP posts:
Costacoffeeplease · 27/08/2015 13:45

The thing is, you asked for opinions, people gave them, and no, I don't think they're great options either, Florian, Gilbert and Clarence are the worst, Roscoe is ok at a push

BitandBot · 27/08/2015 13:46

They don't get the fear they are just giving their opinion. Clearly if lots of people liked these names they would be in the top 10.
If you want a very unusual name for your children then accept it won't be to everyone's taste.
Personally I think they are ok. Actually I think I like Roscoe the best.

Laquila · 27/08/2015 13:47

John Major = fair point

Ikeameatballs · 27/08/2015 13:48

Roscoe or Gilbert are fine. Really don't like the rest.

What about:

Cedric
Myles
Wilfred
Seth
Amos
Quentin

beardsrock · 27/08/2015 13:53

I love Astrid, it's beautiful.

I like Clarence and Roscoe.

ToffeeCrisp40 · 27/08/2015 13:53

Clement or Clemence is nice. Not keen on the rest tho. Astrid reminds me of asteroid flying in space. Or the Astrid from how to train your Dragon. She'll be Nick named Dragon at school cos all kids know the
cartoon. Up to you though. Whatever floats your boat.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/08/2015 13:54

You asked for any thoughts OP and you gotthem.

What were you expecting? Hearts congratulations and a medal? Wow!

I think Clement is the best (bcause Clement Attlee is a hero of mine) but I think the NN Clem is best of all
