Clement, Clarence, Roscoe or Gilbert?

We are totally settled on Astrid if we have a daughter, LOVE IT! but a little confused for a boy. We always had Roscoe in mind way before I was ever pregnant but since being pregnant have come up with a few others. Gilbert, my husband like Gil and I like Bert as nick names, worried child will have 2 diff nicknames! Also like Clarence, Roscoe and Clement, Florian is an outside possibility too. Any thoughts?

I love unusual names I've just never been into the 'old man' genre, whether it's the ultra common Alfie or the far less common Walter.

Pickedmypoison · 27/08/2015 17:05

You have picked names that are not in the top 100. The names are not there because they are not popular. They are not popular because they are not generally liked.

So you can't be surprised that people here don't like them either.

ammature · 27/08/2015 17:06

I just prefer the other spelling.

Incidentally quite by chance I have just clicked onto a baby name website which has a list of the names that have risen the most places in the England and wales stats between 2013 and 2014.

Roscoe is on the list in 10th place (866th in 2014 stats) having jumped 533 places. There were 34 boys given the name, so you are not alone in your taste by any means.

ammature · 27/08/2015 17:07

I'm not surprised. I'm surprised by the utter vitriol towards them.

However, if he will always be known by a nickname such as Ross, Gil or Clem then I think either of those 3 are good.

ammature · 27/08/2015 17:08

Any suggestions?

It's not another spelling. It's pronounced differently. Which means, it's not really after her.
Not that it matters too much. I even like Astrid.

Pickedmypoison · 27/08/2015 17:09

I don't mind Roscoe actually and it is very different from your other names.

Shockers · 27/08/2015 17:09

Don't be upset... none of those names are the name of the child growing inside you yet.

There are names that are 'drippier' than others, and names that appear stronger; many authors use that as a tool. Your list obviously veers towards the former and that is why it has been commented on by quite a few posters. However, should your child be male, and you choose one of those names, he will write his own script and could well change the perception of his name for the people he meets.

Jesus! We are big fans of her music and my husband is a fluent Portuguese speaker- I don't want a pronounciation I would struggle with and I prefer the sound of AstrId. I think it's up to us to know if name is after AG or not? Do I have to justify everything ?

Lordy.

Tiggeryoubastard · 27/08/2015 17:16

If you may not like the answers don't ask. Loads have peow have slated them, a lot saying the same as I did. Drippy. We're not saying that because we just want a laugh, you know. We can see that yes, names do have connotations, rightly or wrongly. Kids do get teased. It happens. Sometimes it can be avoided. I'd prefer to do my best for my child to avoid that. Fwiw I do also think the names are ugly. You asked. This is coming from someone that absolutely loved a name for my youngest that I knew deep down would never be possible. If I hadn't realised that and asked about using it, with hindsight I would have appreciated being told.

Pranmasghost · 27/08/2015 17:17

I love the name Gilbert and all the associated nicknames. I quite like Roscoe too. Clarence to me will always be the cross eyed lion from Daktari!
I also really like Astrid for a girl.
Some lovely choices op.

Lweji · 27/08/2015 17:17

No, you don't have to justify anything. But you will get comments if you mention information that wasn't even asked for. :)

lorelei9 · 27/08/2015 17:20

I quite like Clem but not Clement...I know, I'm odd.

Liked the suggestion of a pp - Lloyd.

BalloonSlayer · 27/08/2015 17:22

Just to add to your joy, anyone who has ever read a book called The Choirboys by Joseph Wambaugh (it was very popular book in the 70s/80s) would never call a child Roscoe in a million years and would wince at a child with such a name.

Mehitabel6 · 27/08/2015 17:24

I don't like any of them.

Arsenic · 27/08/2015 17:27

God this thread is mumsnet at its worst.

Really?? Shock

StanSmithsChin · 27/08/2015 17:29

I don't think the OP has ventured outside of baby names Arse Grin

That could be it Stan Smile

maybebabybee · 27/08/2015 17:31

Why do people bother posting on the baby names board in the first place? Can you not make up your own mind??

I don't like any of the names at all OP, I think they're poncey, but surely the opinion of some random internet stranger isn't important? It's your baby.

ammature · 27/08/2015 17:33

Actually I've been a long time lurker and occasional poster on AIBU/relationships and now pregnancy for a long time. The problem is I've spent no time on baby names to realise how caustic it can be.

And I'm a fan of unusual names BTW, I just don't like these ones.
