Clement, Clarence, Roscoe or Gilbert?

We are totally settled on Astrid if we have a daughter, LOVE IT! but a little confused for a boy. We always had Roscoe in mind way before I was ever pregnant but since being pregnant have come up with a few others. Gilbert, my husband like Gil and I like Bert as nick names, worried child will have 2 diff nicknames! Also like Clarence, Roscoe and Clement, Florian is an outside possibility too. Any thoughts?

And there's Clem Burke from Blondie. A Blondie connection is always cool.

But I don't think I could call out 'Clement' at the top of my voice across a crowded park.

Or Clarence, or Gilbert.

I love Clement and Gilbert! Clarence is great too. Not so keen on Roscoe though.

RunAwayHome · 27/08/2015 14:04

Not keen on any of them. Too frilly or something. just give out a fussy sort of vibe. Old fashioned, but not in a good way.

I know girls with nicknames of Clem and Clemmie.

Clement is the best of the lot for me.

Not hugely keen on Astrid either, but it's OK. Just a bit harsh sound for my taste.

Branleuse · 27/08/2015 14:12

I like them, but youre pretty brave asking for opinions on names here. I have seen most of my kids names slated on here on other peoples threads. They can go fuck themselves obviously, but it does sting a bit.

Gilbert is one of my ds' middle names.

nicknamenoname · 27/08/2015 14:14

I came across a toddler called Clement yesterday. I don't really like it, as it'll definitely end up being shortened to Clem which reminds me of "clammy".

Of your choices, my preference would be Roscoe, although it'll be tricky if you couldn't live with the nn Ross. Gilbert is OK.

Florian is a bit too feminine for my liking. If you like the -ian ending, how about Julian, Simeon, Gideon?

Others you might like are: Laurence, Edmund, Wilfred, Peter.

StanSmithsChin · 27/08/2015 14:18

I do get the feeling some parents just don't like their child given some of the cringe worthy names I see on here. However your baby your choice I just wish some parents would try to look in to the future a bit to see how their chosen name will affect the child.

titchy · 27/08/2015 14:18

Sorry another one in the hate them camp - they're all mummy's boy names to me. Completely different to Astrid who is a strong independent female imo.

ammature · 27/08/2015 14:20

What are your kids called? Can't imagine that I hate my unborn baby based on my name choices but if you think so

BeautifulBatman · 27/08/2015 14:22

I think they're terrible names tbh. The only one I like is Roscoe - but only because it was the name of an old friends doberman pinscher pub dog that used to help itself to pork scratchings at closing time. Sorry.

StanSmithsChin · 27/08/2015 14:25

I didn't say hate I said don't like.

Jacob
Thomas
Lily
Grace.

Some like those names some don't. When choosing them we tried tio imagine them at school/work/pensioners and tried to make sure the names fit either in full or shortened.

villainousbroodmare · 27/08/2015 14:29

Unfortunately I reckon that the typical opinion expressed here will be mild and tolerant compared to that of the brutal general public.
If someone is lucky enough to be a very cool or witty or charismatic person, they can however make any name work for them.

jorahmormont · 27/08/2015 14:32

'Give me your opinion on these names!'

'We hate them'.

'ONLY NICE OPINIONS YOU MEANIES'.

Laquila · 27/08/2015 14:36

Yes and no, Villainous - I do think people feel braver sitting fairly anonymously behind keyboards than they might otherwise, if actually faced with people whose names they weren't keen on. Then again, maybe I'm just a lot more polite than I thought I was :)

StanSmith - the Gilbert I know (I'm actually married to him but didn't want to out myself...) reports very minimal teasing due to name, back at junior achool, and wouldn't change it for anything. Thank you for your concern, but his relationship with his parents is excellent!

Going back to a comment from a poster on the first page - something along the lines of "I think some Munsnetters must live in different worlds to me and my friends" - well, yes. Obviously not literally. But as someone else has said, I guess people are comfortable with what they're used to, hence the unbridled horror at something other than the norm for their community/environment.

Lweji · 27/08/2015 14:39

I hope your child is a girl.

Showing my age, but sheriff Roscoe B. Coltrane would be enough to put me off.
All the rest I don't like. Gilbert is the least bad, but definitely not Bert.
At least give him a better second name he can use instead.

Lweji · 27/08/2015 14:40

Your friends and family won't tell you to your face, but see how enthusiastic they get.

StanSmithsChin · 27/08/2015 14:43

I am happy your husband did not suffer Confused

Oh and don't worry you haven't outed yourself I still have no fucking clue who you are!

Backforthis · 27/08/2015 14:46

I think Gilbert is fine. It wouldn't be my choice but it's a perfectly reasonable name. I love Clement but beyond Clement Freud I find it hard to imagine someone with that name. Roscoe, to me, seems very different from the other names and makes me think dog rather than child.

Some people will never veer away from the top 10 names and others are used to the names common in their environment and can't imagine that others' live lives with a very different name pool. Some are just cunts Wink

Squooshed · 27/08/2015 14:47

Although I do not love the name Gilbert I do love Gilbert Blythe.

I'm so conflicted!

StanSmithsChin · 27/08/2015 14:48
Squooshed · 27/08/2015 14:49

I know a Cnut.

Now there's a name that will present a few challenges.

Backforthis · 27/08/2015 14:57

I don't suppose you like Gerard or Tristan OP?

merlottime · 27/08/2015 15:07

I love Astrid too. Not keen on the others, and I assoiate Clem/Clemmie with girls.

Alternative Prime Ministerial names from old:

Lloyd
spencer
Augustus
Arthur (too popular?)
Stanley (my fave I think)
Winston
Harold

Squooshed · 27/08/2015 15:10

Spencer Perceval was the only PM to have been assassinated.

Top pub quiz fact!

Marcipex · 27/08/2015 15:12

I like Roscoe and Gilbert.

Please don't call a boy Clemmie though.

Astrid is beautiful.
