Boy name needed surfer/unusual/nature

Please help! My DH and I have very different ideas about names. I like old and unusual but he thinks they are all posh (!) and he wants a cool surfer type name. I think they sound too American (I am in UK). I would also like a name that had a meaning in nature somehow as both our names do.

I am realy struggling. At the moment his favourite is Travis, which is ok but I think a bit American. I like Dexter but he says that is a breed of cow! Also I think it is creeping up the charts a bit. Anyway, any suggestions?! Boys name. Thanks!

Zeke and I love Nate.

SeldomAthleticFC · 22/08/2015 11:23

I have American surfer mates with a DS called Sylvan, meaning "of the forest". At first I thought "what were they smoking?" but now I really like it.

SavoyCabbage · 22/08/2015 11:28

Byron! Of course!

I live in Australia.

ImperialBlether · 22/08/2015 11:29

Of those suggested (I know no-one asked me) I really like Sylvan and Rowan. I know a Rowan and a Rohan, both are extremely successful, but Rohan is more gnarly!

IndomitabIe · 22/08/2015 11:44

Oh, I love Flynn too Tron reference

SuburbanRhonda · 22/08/2015 11:45

Dexter is also the serial killer in the TV programme of the same name.

Could your DH pick the name of one his cool surfer mates, perhaps? Grin

My sons name is inspired by a surfer Eddie Aikau, An amazing man but not a very surfer name!

Snapespeare · 22/08/2015 12:18

Murdo. Scots, means sea warrior.

Tough brief. I think you'll find that in general 'surfer' overlaps massively with 'american' or too 'surnamey' for your taste so you are going to find it difficult if that is your husband's taste.

I think your choices are all heavy on x, v, k and w. Quite short, snappy and quirky. I think names beginning with B and F also often feel surfy.

Some of these are very marmite you'll hate a lot! but with the above in mind and nature and a fair few wildcards thrown in for good measure:

Archer
Asa
Ashley
Asher
Ash
Aubrey
Austin
Avery
Axel
Bailey

I've long wanted to be able to persuade someone to call their son Zephyr.
Naturey, cool, surfy (maybe!) but not old-fashioned, sorry. Definitely unusual! Grin

I like Zephyr - doesn't it mean something to do with wind? And was a skateboard brand in the 70s? It's mentioned on that Chilli Peppers song. (Is Zephyr where the Z comes from in Dog Town and Z-Boys?)

GlacindaTheTroll · 22/08/2015 16:59

For top surfer names, try the Top 100 from 20 years ago from Australia, California and Hawaii?

Best RL male surfer I know is called James.

Elderflowergirl · 22/08/2015 18:04

Marcipex you made LOL with that Devon/Sennen comment!

I quite like Byron. Only problem is out surname starts with J so his initials would be BJ! Think that rules out all B names unfortunately

Thumb: my DH LOVES the RHCP! I will run Zephyr past him see what he thinks.

I didn't know Oakley was on CBeebies- haven't entered the world of parenthood yet! Maybe not then. Hmmm

Lots of good suggestions though thank you. I will have a chat with him later
