Come and tell me these names are awful.

Well hopefully you won't think they're awful but am going through girls names now and would like you all to pick as many holes as you can in them, so I don't end up picking something dreadful.

If you have any suggestions for the name I'd be very grateful for those too! :)

So we have:
Mariela
Amara
Lila/Lara
Etain (my phone is refusing to include fadas...)
Saoirse
Liadain
Lena
Juliet
Allegra
Reeva
Soraya
Jane

And that's it so far...apologies I know that's quite a few!

Oh, forgot to mention baby will be mixed race so while I love the names Alba and Bianca, I'm not sure about a name meaning white iyswim. Lemme know if I'm BU about that too!

Don't like: Ottilie, Octavia, Imogen, Romilly, Charlotte...all perfectly good names but not doing it for me. I hope that's helping give an idea of the type of names I'm into (cos I haven't a bloody clue...).

From Soraya to plain Jane, eh? Grin It's a circus naming a baby, isn't it?

Ok, they're all interesting, lovely names. My hot picks are Allegra and Saoirse and Lena (or Milena/Helena).

LynetteScavo · 16/08/2015 18:26

Juliet is really lovely.

raffle · 16/08/2015 18:27

Lara is the best name on your list.
Dislike Reeva and Allegra.

GrizzlebertGrumbledink · 16/08/2015 18:36

Allegra makes me think of pellagra so I wouldn't choose that personally although I doubt many would make the same connection. Lara and Juliet are very nice

SmugairleRoin · 16/08/2015 18:37

I always thought Jane was a simple, pretty name Grin I wish more people used it - no wait I don't,don't want her in a class full of them if she is Jane in the end!

Thanks all for your thoughts so far!

Not keen on any of the names sorry, Lara is ok - but the rest are either very plain or a bit chavy sounding.

I get what you mean about Bianca, how about Amber (I really love) or Honey (which is lovely and cute)

VixxFace · 16/08/2015 18:39

Have you thought of Amaya or Amira or Anaya.

From your list I like Lila or Amara.

LadyLuck81 · 16/08/2015 18:42

I loved Alba but H was no go. I'd don't think it matters if you use it.

I've a Mariel in the family, so similar to one on your list, and think it's just lovely.

Daphnedolittle · 16/08/2015 18:45

Allegra is my favourite. Such an elegant name.
I like Lena and quite like Juliet.
Not keen on the rest, please not Jane! Its so plain compared to the rest of your list.

Dukketeater · 16/08/2015 18:46

I think Lila and Lara are lovely. The rest I think are horrible. Sorry

Ktay · 16/08/2015 18:48

Doesn't Alba mean dawn?

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/08/2015 18:52

Mariela - pretty but prefer it spelt Mariella
Amara - also pretty
Lila/Lara - Lily has been done to death. Lara is nice
Etain - like
Saoirse - meh
Liadain - like. name of a good friend of mine
Lena - okay
Juliet - love
Allegra - meh
Reeva - does this name exist outside of Reeva Steenkamp? I'd definitely avoid.
Soraya - sounds like a meat substitute
Jane - pretty in its plainness. very different to the rest of your list!

Mariella and Juliet are my favourites

NoahVale · 16/08/2015 18:58

I only like the Amara name

SmugairleRoin · 16/08/2015 19:00

Honey is a bit too childish of a name to me tbqh, I wouldn't mind it as her nickname though. Amber on the other hand I quite like.

Amaya/Amira - these are beautiful, adding to list I think!

Had an interesting few minutes there reading about pellagra Grin Thank you though!

Mariel is beautiful LadyLuck, I'd be worried it'd be confused with Muriel though!

I know a little girl called Amira and have always thought what a lovely name it is!

SmugairleRoin · 16/08/2015 19:06

Ktay I read on here (I think twas here anyway) that Alba was related to the name Albus, meaning white in Latin. But I do like it a lot so may just disregard that as a lot of sites are saying it means dawn.

Go for Jane! It's lovely and I bet she would be the only one in her class.

NotAllThoseWhoWanderAreLost · 16/08/2015 19:07

Unless you're actually in Ireland I'd be wary of picking hard to spell/pronounce Gaelic names as she will spend most of her life explaining the spelling and pronunciation. I'm Irish and my dog has a Gaelic name and that requires frequent enough explanation! Nobody I've met over here had a clue how to say or spell it - understandably really. I'd agree with the pp who said that Reeva also automatically = Steenkamp now unfortunately. I really like Lara and Juliet from your list.

bluejeanswhiteshirt · 16/08/2015 19:09

Mariella is lovely. I also like Graciella which I know isn't on your list but still..

Chipsticksnvinegar · 16/08/2015 19:09

How do you pronounce Etain and where would the fada go? That is one I have not heard before.

SmugairleRoin · 16/08/2015 19:10

Mitzy I was thinking that too - my theory was though that Reeva will be forgotten (poor girl, terrible to say really but you know what I mean) by most people and then it can be just an unusual name. Maybe it is too unique to her though?

I did Grin at that meat substitute comment though!

I am Irish and living in Dublin NotAllThose :)

I also like the suggestion Mariel and I don't think it would be confused with Muriel. Marielle as a spelling?

NotAllThoseWhoWanderAreLost · 16/08/2015 19:14

Alba means 'dawn' in Spanish and 'Scotland' in Scottish Gaelic - when you cross the border from England the road signs say 'Failte gu Alba' (welcome to Scotland). The word does stem from the ancient word for 'white'.
