Come and tell me these names are awful.

Well hopefully you won't think they're awful but am going through girls names now and would like you all to pick as many holes as you can in them, so I don't end up picking something dreadful.

If you have any suggestions for the name I'd be very grateful for those too! :)

So we have:
Mariela
Amara
Lila/Lara
Etain (my phone is refusing to include fadas...)
Saoirse
Liadain
Lena
Juliet
Allegra
Reeva
Soraya
Jane

And that's it so far...apologies I know that's quite a few!

Jane and Soraya are really nice. Etain looks like you spelt stain with a typo.

ByTheWishingWell · 16/08/2015 19:14

I think Allegra is lovely, and mentally added it to my list. I then googled it, and all the results were about an antihistamine called Allegra. Sad

Is Soraya pronounced as it is written (with a 'ray' sound) or So-rye-ah? Either way, I think it's lovely.

I also think Jane is way too plain compared to your other choices!

NotAllThoseWhoWanderAreLost · 16/08/2015 19:15

Oh cool, crack on then haha Grin If you like Reeva what about Caoimhe then? Very similar pronunciation and a beautiful name imo with a lovely meaning.

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/08/2015 19:16

If you google the name Reeva, Reeva Steenkamp is the only result that comes up. It would be different if it was just a rare name but I think she's the only one. Maybe her parents made it up.

SmugairleRoin · 16/08/2015 19:20

Etain - fadas on the e and i. Lots of debate about pronunciation online (of course Grin ), I would pronounce it eh-tane or eh-tain.

How did I not think of Caoimhe?! Adding to list. Maybe it'll have to replace Reeva as that's not getting great feedback.

SmugairleRoin · 16/08/2015 19:25

Reeva was apparently a variation on Riva when I looked at baby name sites. Perhaps that spelling is better...would possibly get pronounced like River (I can hear it now, Riv-ah) in an English accent?

Ok. Let's forget Reeva, and replace it with Caoimhe :)

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/08/2015 19:26

Caoimhe is nice but there must be a squillion of them in Dublin. I've never met a Juliet though!

MadamArcatiAgain · 16/08/2015 19:26

Doesn't Allegra mean fast? I don't think any woman would want to be known as fast!!!

AlfieandAnnieRose · 16/08/2015 19:26

I know a Soraya and I think it's a beautiful name. Out of the list I also like Saoirse, but Soraya is my favourite!

villainousbroodmare · 16/08/2015 19:28

Smugairle, is aoibhinn liom do leasainm agus ba bhreá liom dá n-úsáidfeá ainm Gaelach!
Cad mar gheall ar Muireann (toisc go bhfuil suim agat san fharraige), Aifric, Ailbhe, Damhnait, Aodhmair, Ríona, Sadhbh nó Sorcha?
Is féidir Étaín a litriú mar Éadaoin chomh maith. Aimn an-deas é i mo thuairimse.
Is fearr liom Mariela ná Mariella; is maith liom Amara agus Lara agus Liadáin agus Soraya. B'fhearr liom Julia ná Juliet. Níl mé chomh tógtha le Allegra ná le Lena, agus nuair a chloisim Reeva, smaoiním ar Reeva Steenkamp amháin.
Tá sé dochreidte a rá go bhfuil ainmneacha "chavvy" roghnaithe agat, agus ansin dul ar aghaidh chun Honey agus Amber a mholadh! Grin

mikado1 · 16/08/2015 19:29

Really like Juliet, Allegra and Jane, though don't know about Allegra in Dublin? (I live here too, just think we don't get away with the more unusual ones here!!) How about Elena instead of Lena (pronounced the Italian way- Eh-le-na. I also love Caroline, Madeline and Emma. Lovely, strong feminine names that will stand the test of time.

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/08/2015 19:30

Oh ní maith liom Aifric ar chor ar bith. Tá fhios agam ar cailín ufásach leis an ainm sin.

mikado1 · 16/08/2015 19:31

Yy to Afraic, and what about Sadhbh and Roisin?

pomegranatesandfilms · 16/08/2015 19:31

Juliet - love that name. A forgotten lovely name.

AmysTiara · 16/08/2015 19:41

Juliet is a lovely name. I also like Lila and Lara. The others are okay except for Jane and Amara

SmugairleRoin · 16/08/2015 19:50

Villainous, chuir do phost mion gáire mór ar m'aghaidh - is aoibhinn liom nuair atá an Ghaeilge i usáid i rith an lá! Agus táim chomh sásta go dtuigeann daoine mo leasainm anseo.

Is ainm aláinn é Muireann (agus tá suim agam san fharraige, tá an cheart agat) - ach tá cara agam darbh ainm Muireann agus de bhrí sin, ceapaim ní bheidh mé in ann é a usáid - beidh mo chairde go léir in éad di!

Aifric, Ailbhe, Ríona - caithfidh mé na ainmneacha seo a chuir ar an liosta, tá fuaim aláinn acu.
Tá chairde agam le paistí darbh ainm Julia agus Sorcha, nilím ró-cinnte faoi na aimneacha seo.

Mikado: Aifric is lovely. Sadhbh I've just always thought is a lot of consonants all in one go, I'm not too keen on it. Roisín - pretty, but I do know a very annoying one and it's ruined the name for me.

English speaking posters: My username means jellyfish in Irish, villainous spotted that and wrote me a lovely long post as Gaeilge (and made me so happy to see Irish being used too!).

Adding Ríona, Ailbhe and Aifric to the list - Ríona was something I originally considered but never added to the list, can't think why!

OP posts:
pretend · 16/08/2015 20:00

How is Sadhbh pronounced?

I can do welsh pronunciation but can't even get started on Gaelic!!

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 16/08/2015 20:03

I know 2 Reevas so don't think it's made up!
I love Juliet.

SmugairleRoin · 16/08/2015 20:03

Also mikado: Elena is a beautiful, gorgeous name and I'd pick it in a heartbeat - but one of my friends is called Elena and I just don't think I could name her after her iyswim - they'd all be jealous Grin Also good friends with an Emma and not a fan of Madeline - I just think McCann. Caroline though I'll have a think about.

Mitzy you do make a very good point about Caoimhe though I have to admit.

Ok, currently it's
Amira/Amara
Mariela
Lila/Lara
Étaín (alternatively can be spelled Éadaoin)
Saoirse
Liadáin
Lena
Juliet
Allegra
Caoimhe (replacing Reeva I think)
Soraya
Jane (poor Jane, very divisive name Grin ).
Aifric
Ailbhe (or Alba possibly)
Ríona

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 16/08/2015 20:04

I love Amara, in fact I may steal it if I'm having a girl

SmugairleRoin · 16/08/2015 20:07

Sadhbh is sort of like five with an s instead of f.

Thoughts on Síofra, anyone? DP has just suggested it...

LibrariesGaveUsPower · 16/08/2015 20:09

Jane is fabulous!

LintRoller · 16/08/2015 20:14

Jane is lovely.

If you like Elena, use it - just have a quiet word with your friends in advance.

LintRoller · 16/08/2015 20:17

Beware difficult to say /spell names. It might be fine in Ireland but what if she moves elsewhere? I am biased as have a v complicated name that is well known in my parents' country of origin but not anywhere else - have had a lifetime of "how do you pronounce that?" - really tedious.
