Grace is boring now, its what people choose if they can't think of anything else

Lola is ok prefer lois or laura though

Sophronia · 04/08/2015 11:38

I like Grace (prefer it as a first name) but not Lola.

I do think the 'stripper/showgirl' connotation is old hat, especially to a generation who will have grown up with Charlie and Lola and have that as their first point of reference for the name.

My cousin used this name last year, and I like it, so there.

I really like Lola buT I think grace as a middle name is dull. It's the Ann/Louise/Marie/Jane that a those of us born in the 70/80s were lumbered with

squoosh · 04/08/2015 11:55

Not a massive fan, I always think Lola is a bit of a nothing name. The candyfloss of girls names.

My dd2 has Grace as a middle name (after her great grandmother) and I love it!

I'm indifferent to Lola (and Lila and Leila etc) and struggle to find anything to say, positive or negative.

CheersMedea · 04/08/2015 16:17

also like Nancy

Reminds me of that song - something like " oh me Nancy tickled me fancy, Oh me charming Billy Boy".

For me the overriding associating is Nancy from Oliver Twist - which is not a good pedigree name to give a girl - that of an alcoholic thief and a prostitute who was beaten and abused by Billy Sykes who eventually kills her.

KnitFastDieWarm · 04/08/2015 16:22

I love Grace, but I wouldn't pick Lola because of all the songs associated with the name.

What about:

Evie Grace
Lydia Grace
Lily Grace
Lila Grace
Thea Grace?

KnitFastDieWarm · 04/08/2015 16:22

I think Nancy Grace is cute! Smile

nemo81 · 04/08/2015 18:20

Love the name Lola.

Grace is over used and boring, a bit like May/Mae.

I see Lexi was mentioned as an alternative. Nasty common name!

PuppyMouse · 04/08/2015 18:31

I have a Grace. Never met another one and we very much chose it. Big fat raspberries to anyone who said it was dull. We get a lot of compliments on it and I like that it doesn't have any preconceptions. You could meet a Grace from any family and it's easy for a child to say and writeGrin

Shirleycantbe · 04/08/2015 18:37

Lana?

SmugairleRoin · 04/08/2015 20:00

Grace is a lovely, massively overused middle name, imo. Nice name but I'd avoid it and May/Rose like the plague at the moment.

Not a fan of Lola, it reminds me of my aunts small yappy Jack Russell or, as others said, the Kinks song/"her name was lola, she was a showgirl..."

And tbh, when I think about the name Lola it also reminds me of Lolita, also not something I'd be happy to name a child after.

Sorry, op. I do think similar names (Lara/Lila/Lorna/Lana etc) are nice, though.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 04/08/2015 20:16

It's really 'now' so it will date quickly. I think it has dated already actually.

ifgrandmahadawilly · 04/08/2015 20:20

I love it.

Alisvolatpropiis · 05/08/2015 08:55

Lola sounds incomplete to me, many diminutives are now used as given names but Lola very much sounds like a nickname.

Puppu, I don't think anybody is saying that Grace is itself a dull name, rather it is dull to see it time and time again as a middle name.

I've only ever met three Grace's, who in their 50's, teen's and a baby respectively.

sweetpeame · 05/08/2015 09:02

Not a huge fan of Lola but it's fine. How about Lara which is very pretty and less popular? Although popularity may not bother you. I think Grace is a lovely name but as previous posters have said it and May and Rose have become sooooooo popular as middle names that it's taken away from them. Grace as a first name perhaps? Incidentally I know a Lola Grace who is about 2 months old now.

ch1134 · 05/08/2015 09:27

I think of Lola as a short name for Dolores, which means pain, and puts me off.

chrome100 · 05/08/2015 11:29

Lola? Sounds like a stripper to me.
