Hey all, due in a few weeks and we are naming our son Atlas Isaiah. My only concern is that I don't want to choose a name that's too popular/becomes popular!
When I named my daughter Ava ten years ago, there were no other Ava's around-now they're everywhere! Same happened with my son Sonny 8 years ago!
I know it shouldn't matter but I'm just curious.....
Thank you :)

Atlas?! I can safely say I don't know any...

luckiestgirlintheworld · 02/08/2015 15:54

Ha. I think you're pretty safe with Atlas.

jusdepamplemousse · 02/08/2015 15:54

Not a one.

Actually - maybe a cat?

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 02/08/2015 15:55

Never heard of it as a name so obviously I don't know any. It's gorgeous though. May I ask how you have chosen it.
But any name runs the risk of being one minute literally unheard and then next minute you're tripping over them.

RiverTam · 02/08/2015 15:57

Atlas? Well, I just hope he'll be a big lad, is all.

DocHollywood · 02/08/2015 15:57

I know a Lexi(con), a Dick(tionary), a Thea(saurus) a Gazza(teer) and an Al(manac) but never come across an Atlas.

Drquin · 02/08/2015 15:58

Isn't it a middle name of one of Kirstie Allsopp's boys?
Other than that, never heard of it used in a non-navigational sense.

BackInTheRealWorld · 02/08/2015 15:58

Absolutely loads, best call him something else.

esiotrot2015 · 02/08/2015 15:59

I know one Atticus
Is Atlas a name then ?
Ava and Atlas sound a bit too similar to me

TopCivilServant · 02/08/2015 16:01

Yup, shit loads.

MyPelvicFloorTrainsItself · 02/08/2015 16:09

I know one, who is about six months old.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 02/08/2015 16:10

Do I live on another planet then because I've not heard of any

BeautifulBatman · 02/08/2015 16:12

I don't know any. I think theres a good reason for that. It's awful.

barbecue · 02/08/2015 16:13

None

Amimitchell · 02/08/2015 16:15

Thanks guys, especially the sarcastic responses- well done you! ????????
My dad suggested the name, knowing I like unusual names, and when I did some research I realised it makes sense to use it! Atlas was obviously a Greek god, the Titan of navigation and astronomy, which my partner and I are both fascinated with, both being scorpios. Anyway, the Atlantic Ocean was named after Atlas and, since my partner is from USA and I am from the UK, it made sense for us to name our son after the one thing that connects those two :)
It's nice to have a meaning behind a name, although with my last two, it was just because I liked the names, although I do have a thing for the old American blues singers (sonny), and 50s films (Ava Gardner)

I've never heard of, or met, anyone called Atlas. Are there no other Greek myth type names you'd prefer?

wankerchief · 02/08/2015 16:17

Frightfully overused, I met 7 at Macdonalds today alone

How about Gary?
He will be the only one in his class

TheCraicDealer · 02/08/2015 16:20

I think it's a great name, I'd consider it as a middle name for sure. But as someone else said I hope he has a robust build. Otherwise it would be like having a Diana who protests against hunting, or a Hermes who dawdles.

scatterthenuns · 02/08/2015 16:24

Might be quite a few in school - geography classrooms seem to be full of them.

Smartleatherbag · 02/08/2015 16:26

Don't call the poor boy that. Middle name, sure, but that's a terrible name.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 02/08/2015 16:29

I might put this name to be dp. When I see him in the week See what he thinks

MrsBungle · 02/08/2015 16:29

None. I think it's safe to say that atlas won't become popular.

ScrambledSmegs · 02/08/2015 16:31

Do you live in Stoke Newington? You'll probably meet at least a few there, but should think you'll be safe elsewhere in the UK.

albertcampionscat · 02/08/2015 16:34

Yees. Would be tricky to be a weedy Atlas.
