What do you all think? I love this, think it's very elegant, but are we brave enough? And what could you shorten it to?

I've never heard of it. Girl or boy?

EstaRive · 16/07/2015 17:54

Its a marmite name and the purists will be on a minute to tell you - only if you are Cornish.

But I love it Grin. I'm not Cornish. I think its beautiful, and wanted it for DD, but DH vetoed.

I used to work with a woman called Loveday and her nn was Lovey.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 16/07/2015 17:55

I love this name! We discounted it though, because most people either hate it out v have never heard of it. It is gorgeous and elegant though.

buntingbingo · 16/07/2015 17:56

I'm not cornish at all. It's a girls name.

Not sure I could live with Lovey.

But I do so love it.

I love this name, it was a strong contender for DD.

Shortening would be Lovey, I imagine.

Molotov · 16/07/2015 17:57

It sounds like a code name. Sorry, it's not my cup of tea at all.

EsmetheWitch · 16/07/2015 17:58

I love this name and I was desperate to call dd2 Loveday. DP vetoed it although now he loves it too. Bit bloody late now.........Hmm

MirandaGoshawk · 16/07/2015 18:06

Dunno.

It's individual, unusual, and one of those names which for me has neither positive nor negative connotations. Dch just 'become' their names & once people get to know them they don't think twice about the name. So it's not one I'd choose but it's not awful.

PressEscape · 16/07/2015 18:10

Awful. Sorry.

girliefriend · 16/07/2015 18:10

I would pull this face if you introduced me to someone with this name - Hmm

I have never heard of it before, think it sounds weird - sorry!

switchitoff · 16/07/2015 18:11

Not being Cornish I'd never heard it before until recently when I was introduced to a little girl with that name, paired with an equally-challenging surname. I'm afraid I spurted out my coffee when I heard her name. Blush I think you'd have to be very confident to carry it off because it will definitely attract attention.

Toptack · 16/07/2015 18:11

Beautiful - I would have wanted it if we had had a girl.

boxofholes · 16/07/2015 18:16

it is the middle name of one of my daughters! I really really love it but hardly ever hear it outside quite a small area (where I come from). DH wouldn't let me use it as her first name, I don't think he'd ever heard it before though I grew up around it :)

boxofholes · 16/07/2015 18:17

it's great to hear people thinking about using it, it would be so sad if it died out.

ShadowFire · 16/07/2015 18:20

I don't know what you could shorten it to other than Love or Lovey.

I'm not sure what I think of it as a name though. It's very unusual - I've only ever come across one in real life, and only one fictional one (in the Chalet School books) - and it sounds more like a descriptive term than a name. Agree it's likely to attract attention so you'd have to be confident to carry it off.

LuckyCornish13 · 16/07/2015 18:21

It's a Cornish name, but not a common/popular one.

I only know one; she's 30ish and never heard her called anything but Loveday

thunderbird69 · 16/07/2015 18:21

Sorry, makes me think of a sex shop

littleostrich · 16/07/2015 18:22

I knew a Loveday. Her friends called her 'Lovers'...

Haggismcbaggis · 16/07/2015 18:26

I've always loved this name. I first heard it in a Johanna Trollope book I think. Go for it - it's beautifulGrin

loveliesbleeding1 · 16/07/2015 18:28

I think it's a pretty word, but a strange name.

milkysmum · 16/07/2015 18:30

I've never heard this name before at all. If I'm honest it does sound a little ridiculous- sorry!

bridgetsmummy · 16/07/2015 18:32

No, awful name.

Tinkfromlovejoy · 16/07/2015 18:41

Love it! Loveday is a character in Rosamund Pilcher's "Coming Home" which is a fave book from my teens. There is also a made for TV movie of the book starring Joanna Lumley which is regularly shown on Living or Dave or some such channel. My Dh would never let me use it but I'd love to meet someone in real life with that name.

marshmallowpies · 16/07/2015 18:49

I'm not Cornish, though I've always wished I was, and I love Loveday. If I was going to use it, it would probably fall into 'unusual middle name' category for me. I also really love Lamorna, as in Lamorna Cove, as I stayed near there once and remember it very fondly.

BackforGood · 16/07/2015 18:54

I would definitely have to exercise my well practiced "do not change your expression" face.

Don't do it!
