I was just wondering what unusual spellings of totally common names that you have heard. I've come across a Khatlynne and an Ezykile.

Surely, any couple with the name McClatchey must toy with using Versace. You know, for the craic.

I knew a Serwa but it was an African name and not a misspelling. Poor girl was always called Sarah though.

I don't know, I reckon the la-a thing has been around so long people could very well be naming their kids la-a. I work in various schools so see a variety of names and variants. My colleague came back to our office wondering how to pronounce a name he'd seen on a coat peg. 'Twas La-a.

I quite like making up unusual spellings Blush I would never give my child an unusual spelling, but its fun any way, trying to get the most ridiculous spelling with it still making sense.

Lilly is the standard spelling in American, I think.

Misspellings have been going on a long time, though. I had a great aunt, born around 1910. Her parents wanted to name her Gladys (very trendy at the time) but as the name comes from Wales they wanted to give her the Welsh spelling for authenticity (Gwladys). No Welsh connections in the family. Her father make a guess at the spelling and registered her as Gladwys, which she was stuck with her whole life.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/06/2015 21:46

I think Lilly is also the spelling for someone whose full name is Lillian , hence the 2 L's. Interesting that it's what they use in America .

I've come across "Charliee" (for a boy). Why do that? In what possible way is that an improvement? How are you supposed to pronounce it? Makes me want to throw things.

Rubee (ruby) is probably one of the most unusual worst spellings I've known.

TheSortingCat · 25/06/2015 14:10

Hazil

Danniyel

I went to primary school with them. (They were sisters.)

JakeyBurd · 25/06/2015 15:21

Surely L-A would be pronounced Eldashy? Grin

I worked with a woman, now about 30, called Shenade (apparently in honour of her mother's Irish roots), and DS1 had Syrennytee (or something like that! ) in his preschool class 5 years ago. I think it just shows some parents are daft in every generation Hmm

WeOnlyWantToBeOurselves · 26/06/2015 04:32

Recently now, I've come across a Dawnyell, a Madyson, and a Madisson.

I know a Myshele and a Jesika...

BeetlebumShesAGun · 26/06/2015 12:35

I know a Finlee (girl) and a Robynne

Icedfinger · 26/06/2015 12:49

I've taught:
Jac
Jak
Jakc

Variants of Jack! Ridiculous!

WeOnlyWantToBeOurselves · 04/07/2015 01:22

Fynlee is the name of a girl I used to know and Jakc is a terrible variant of Jack.

GreatAuntDinah · 04/07/2015 07:47

tiphanie is the standard French spelling. Maybe her parents had broader horizons than you.

Bellejournee · 04/07/2015 08:19

I've heard of a Fynn (Finn) and an Ellee (Ellie).

Seriouslyffs · 04/07/2015 09:57

Grin Dinah
I don't like these
boringly frequent threads as foreignly spelt names get sneered at and that dasha racist urban myth gets trotted out.

swampytiggaa · 04/07/2015 10:07

I know siblings called tie and codyii.

I also know a klowy.

florascotia · 04/07/2015 12:43

Geordie is a traditional short form of George in the north east.

florascotia · 04/07/2015 12:51

Should have said that comment was in response to post up-thread.

CardinalRed · 05/07/2015 23:00

It's also the name of a film starring Bill Travers! And yes, Geordie is the hero's name. And he's from Scotland.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 05/07/2015 23:03

I know a Keyleigh. Yuk.
