I was just wondering what unusual spellings of totally common names that you have heard. I've come across a Khatlynne and an Ezykile.

The one that sticks in my mind is Eeveee, for Evie, only because when dd was writing her a Christmas card she wasn't sure where the v went.

I think I might have mentioned it earlier, but I too like unusual spellings and names. Mhairi is a pretty name actually.

I know a Cliodhna. Or maybe Cliohdna.

Lovely Irish name... Except It's still 'cleaner'.

People should take more care - and why do some parents not spot the obvious in the initials? Eg. A girl at uni- S. Melling. To marks, her folks. Your name is Melling and you immediately think yes, a name beginning with S would go very well?

I recently came across a Gorjie (georgie) which I thought was pretty bad!

RiverTam · 18/06/2015 09:10

Bryone (Briony)
Summah. I just think it sounds incredibly gormless. This is in Australia, where I believe they go on for the entertainingly spelt name, I know that one of the top boys' names is Jackson/Jaxon.

My (American) cousin has a friend Stephanie, but the spelling is Stefanny.

Seriously.

TorrAlexandra · 18/06/2015 14:25

I can understand people changing a spelling if it'll stump people when spelt traditionally (ie turning Niamh into Neve before the name became more popular) but taking a lovely traditional name and spelling it some bonkers way just to be 'different' pisses me off to no end. I know one person who's called her DD Sophire - what's wrong with Sophia??!

I have a friend who is a primary school teacher and she and her colleagues now have to get together at the beginning of each school year so that they can teach each other how to pronounce the names of the kids coming into their class. Ridiculous.

Jaymz. Saw it in a newspaper once. Wtf is Ezykile?

00100001 · 18/06/2015 14:32

I'm Alison
Not many in RL, but I'm very good at creating the unusual spellings!

00100001 · 18/06/2015 14:33

I'm not Alison.... not sure where that came from!

00100001 · 18/06/2015 14:33

See, if I saw Sophire , I'd pronounce it "So-Fire" [confused[

SunnyBaudelaire · 18/06/2015 14:36

honestly I think its dreadful unless the parents have dyslexia.

Lancelottie · 18/06/2015 14:36

Frayr.

I assumed it was a boy (isn't there a Norse god Freyr?), but no, it's pronounced Freya.

SunnyBaudelaire · 18/06/2015 14:38

fastwindow I know a Cliodhna too, but do not see what this has to with yooneek name spelling....
oh and its 'clee - erna' not 'cleaner'

MemphisBella · 18/06/2015 14:44

Maizy. Yes, like the corn. Poor girl.

HazleNutt · 18/06/2015 14:45

Deyzi - pronounced Daisy.
Apparently it's the French spelling - I'm not convinced!

MehsMum · 18/06/2015 15:11

Ezykile?
It looks as if it should be pronounced EasyKyle ('Take it easy, Kyle, just calm down, there's a good lad...') but is it meant to be Ezekiel?

reuset · 18/06/2015 15:31

Shock

I spotted a Sacson recently, Saxon is bad enough without meddling!

mrspremise · 18/06/2015 20:50

Lilly. With two 'l's Hmm AND it's hyphenated with another predictable name Confused

imayhavelostmymarbles · 18/06/2015 21:08

Maya, Maia, surely should be pronounced May-a, but what about Mya pronouncing it the same way. Confuses me everytime and pisses the parents off but if you want it pronounced that way, help us out a little please!!!

almapudden · 18/06/2015 21:13
