I was just wondering what unusual spellings of totally common names that you have heard. I've come across a Khatlynne and an Ezykile.

I know two Natassjas fish, same issue, drives them mad.

EmmaWoodlouse · 21/06/2015 19:54

The most unusual ones I can remember meeting are Calib, Dayseye and Jaimee.

One of my teacher friends delights in telling us of her student L - A (pronounced Ladasha). I think these made up, ridiculous spellings are a cruel thing to do to a child, who has to live with the name all through school.

AnneOfCleavage · 21/06/2015 20:10

I think that's an urban myth theavenger as heard that story from many people & it always gets trotted out on these baby name threads Grin

SunnyBaudelaire · 21/06/2015 20:13

that one about Ladasha is simply not true - it has been regurgitated so many times that if it were true, there would be at least one in every school in the country.

Cloggal · 21/06/2015 20:49

Same with the Versace McClatchey story in Scotland. I'm awaiting the stampede of people telling me their friend taught her, but I've heard this from people in at least five different council areas. If she is out there, her story has spread...

Emmer (in my head I read it Emmeerrrrrr)

WeOnlyWantToBeOurselves · 22/06/2015 02:38

Actually for some reason, I think that Jhon just makes more sense.

I quite like Emmer, but it would be better as Emmerson.

Is Lakelynne a real name? I know of a girl at Uni named Lakelynne and I'm not sure if it is, but I love it.

Clayer.
Why?
Claire means bright and shining.
Clay is heavy and grey.

Some pretty names on this list but I have always wondered why people go for spelling names in bizarre ways. It just means that every time the child has to tell someone their name for anything official they will always end up having to spell it out. Which must be frustrating. I think if I had a normal name spelt bizzarely I would wait till I was old enough and get it changed by deed poll. I also tend to assume the parents can't spell. Sorry! I do like the names listed though! Ever so nice some of them. With Gaelic and Welsh names it may appear that they are spelt wrongly but the letters in Welsh and Gaelic do not always make the same sounds as they do in English so for example Ffion because Ff makes an F sound in Welsh and a single F makes a sound like a V.

Emmer-Leigh
Ebbonnie
Blu
Goerge
Finly
Feebee

Raiph
Elle (pronounced Ellie)

00100001 · 22/06/2015 18:36

Also player doesn't even sound the same as Clair...

LynetteScavo · 22/06/2015 21:45

I met a retired person called Sallie today, so unusal spellings are nothing new.

DH suggested we call DD Yve a relative Yvonne. It didn't happen.

humlebee7 · 22/06/2015 22:13

Friends just named new boy Zavier. Should that not be Xavier?!

lljkk · 22/06/2015 22:45

I think Xavier should be said 'HA-vee-air'.
If I wanted it said with a Z sound at start, I'd spell it with a Z.

cumsanctuspiritu · 22/06/2015 22:57

Alyvya
Shyann
Boi
Ashali (pr. Ashley) - I like this one and suspect it's not made up
Jasen

WaferInMyCoffee · 22/06/2015 23:12

I once knew a Jazzmyn

U8myufo · 22/06/2015 23:13

My cousin teaches a kid at her school called L-A (pronounced ladasha) no word of a lie!

MyGastIsFlabbered · 22/06/2015 23:16

I came across a Tiphanie once, took me a while to figure it out.

TodaysAGoodDay · 22/06/2015 23:40

When I gave birth to DS, there was a woman in the bed opposite me with a DD. The photographer came to take pics (and names), I heard him saying 'Bethany? B-E-T-H-A-N-Y?' And she said 'No, B-E-F-A-N-Y'
Poor kid.

SunnyBaudelaire · 23/06/2015 04:41

" My cousin teaches a kid at her school called L-A (pronounced ladasha) no word of a lie!"

oh gosh another ladasha - funny how many of them there are isnt it?

yes I think your cousin is lying.

LazyRohazy · 23/06/2015 05:40

Cloggal Noo! It's an urban myth? I have a teacher friend in Glasgow who swears blind he taught a Versace McClatchey about 10 yrs ago! Gutted, I totally believed him.

I have come across a Shavonne. I have also come across a reverse situation: girl called Sian but pronounced See-Ann.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 23/06/2015 06:30

I know someone with a Kaileb. I.only knew it wasn't spelled Caleb by reading the tattoo on her foot one day. Quite handy really.

Someone at work was saying if her Bump is a girl she wants to call it "Olivia-Rose but with an A" ..... so Alivia then? No no, Olivia but spelled Alivia.

peacoat · 23/06/2015 06:32

I know a Serwah. Like Sarah with a speech impediment.
