Long boys' names with fab nicknames

We've found out that our bump is blue so I'm looking for boys' names.

Here's a list of my current faves. I like a long name with a short, cool nickname. DD (Marianne) is mainly known by a nickname.

Nathaniel (Nate) - but we can't use this as nephew has a very similar name, which is a shame as it's my fave
Zachary (Zac) - DH's favourite
Rafferty (Rafe/Raff) - I love this but is it getting very popular?
Jared (Jed) - wildcard
Gabriel (Gabe) - I like it but DH will never go for it

I also love Jude - just as it is.

Middle name will be Albert. Our surname is very common so I'd like a more unusual first name, which I think rules out Zachary.

Any inspiration much appreciated!

2 out of my favourite 3 have already been mentioned - sebastian/seb, Benjamin or benedict for Ben
my current front runner is Gus with a full name of Augustus...

LOL Raahh

I think it was drummed into me by my (awful) mother that they weren't proper names - probably why she gave me such a horrible one!!

Rivercam · 30/05/2015 19:25

Theodore - Theo
Timothy - Tim
Benedict - Ben

TychosNose · 30/05/2015 19:33

Lawrence - lars
Montgomery - mo
Maurice - mo

We have an Isaac shortened to zac, but they were on our short list.

ginzillas · 30/05/2015 20:22

I didn't mean nicknames. I meant shortenings. I think a longer name sounds better with our one syllable surname. But I like a good shortening too. Just my preference.

I like short names too. Jude is on my list (I'm not some sort of Jude Law superfan by the way - although I'd love Sadie for a girl!)

when I hear the word Rafferty.
ChalkyC · 30/05/2015 20:44

I have a Zachary - known as Zach - much prefer spelling it with an 'h'!! We only know one Zach but obv it's not uncommon. We also have a Cassius, nn Cass or Cassy - I love both their names!

thatsthewayitgoes · 30/05/2015 20:47

I have a Raphael. Fwiw he hates his full name (aged 6) but loves his nickname Rafi x

ginzillas · 30/05/2015 20:50

Chalky - both great names! I have a personal preference for Zac. Not sure why - just instinct.

I think it's safe to say that Rafferty is a Marmite name. Despite the criticism, I still love it!

Although I just read an interview with poor old Rafferty Law who apparently doesn't like his full name and prefers to be called Raff.

thatstheway - why doesn't your DS like his name?

What about Patrick (Pat) or Dante (Dan)?

Oly4 · 30/05/2015 20:53

I love Rafferty! My DH didnt so I couldn't have it but it's my favourite boys name

DoTheStrand · 30/05/2015 20:56

Love Rafferty / Rafe but vetoed by DH. We've got an Ashton and a Cassian . I always use their full names but we chose them in full knowledge that as teenagers they are sure to be known as Ash and Cass to their friends.

ginzillas · 30/05/2015 20:56

Glad someone else likes it Oly
Martine Mcutcheon's new baby son is called Rafferty. Do you think it's going to get really popular?
We asked DD (aged three) which she preferred - Zachary or Rafferty and she mixed them up and said she liked 'Wakaday' best.

We have a Rafferty, I love it (obviously!) although we don't shorten it at all yet. Also love Sullivan (Sully) and Dashiell (Dash).
