Aurora or Lola?

Opinions on aurora and Lola?
DH Loves it, I picked our other dd1 and dd2's name so these are the names he's picked!

Middle name would be Jane and last name is one syllable

I prefer Aurora Smile

Lunastarfish · 18/04/2015 11:36

I like both names, they are very pretty.

I loved Sleeping Beauty as a child , she is Princess Aurora. The only thing with Aurora I don't like is that it may be shortened to Rory - fine for a boy but not for a girl.

Lola doesn't have any nicknames so I would choose that.

OutragedFromLeeds · 18/04/2015 11:42

I really, really don't like either of them. If I had to go with one of them I'd pick Lola and try and find a longer name that it could be a nn for. It's traditionally short for Dolores, but that's even worse and means 'sorrows' so I'd try and find something else. Anything with a 'lo' in it could work.

glittertits · 18/04/2015 11:43

Aurora is awful. Lola is a showgirl, but I like it.

Sgtmajormummy · 18/04/2015 11:47

I'm not a great fan of Aurora. It sounds too much like "Rororo" when spoken quickly in English. It's lovely spoken in Spanish or Italian where every syllable rolls off the tongue. In fact I know a pair of Italian twins called Alba and Aurora (Dawn and ...er... Dawn)!

Sgtmajormummy · 18/04/2015 11:50

Or Dawn and Daybreak. Just doesn't sound the same, does it?

paxtecum · 18/04/2015 11:52

Lola was a transvestite according to The Kinks in the 60s.
Google the lyrics.

Alisvolatpropiis · 18/04/2015 12:02

Aurora.

Don't like Lola at all, Lila is nice though?

islablossom15 · 18/04/2015 14:16

Thank you for your input!
If it was my choice I wouldn't have either but I said I'd give him this one..
I personally prefer aurora but only because I know a few Lola's and prefer the less popular choice.
I originally wanted emme but it's apparently to close to my name

I don't like either, sorry. Both too showgirl/stripper for me.

crapfatbanana · 18/04/2015 14:57

I prefer Jane.

WouldYouLikeACupOfTeaTooMate · 18/04/2015 15:01

I have an Aurora. We call her Rorie. I adore her name, so does she. We have always got positive reactions.

BreeVDKamp · 18/04/2015 15:40

Aurora! Love it and love the nn Rory.

HopefulHamster · 18/04/2015 15:42

I like Aurora and Rory is fine as a nickname (see Gilmore Girls!)

sockmatcher · 18/04/2015 15:43

If you don't really like either of them then don't use them!

BreeVDKamp · 18/04/2015 16:57

I just realised why this thread caught my eye - I actually know of a little girl who is called Aurora Lola - bit of a mouthful!

Allie82 · 18/04/2015 16:59

I prefer Lola. Aurora is the name of the computer program we use at work so maybe that why! Ha!

pilates · 18/04/2015 17:03

Dislike both.

ChocolateWombat · 18/04/2015 17:10

I agree that Lola is a showgirl or transvestite. Always amuses me when people choose a name for their daughter associated with something like prostitution (I know people who named their girl Jezebel)
Aurora is a disney Princess.

TheFillyjonk · 18/04/2015 17:11

Aurora is much nicer - like others on here, Lola is reminiscent to me of strippers and transvestites.

"But I know what I am,
I'm a man, I'm a man
And so is Lola."

Great song though!

I find it really hard to say aurora.

So would be Lola.

Only I don't like Lola.

LeoandBoosmum · 18/04/2015 17:20

I would choose Lola (if I had to as I don't really like it at all, sorry). Aurora sounds so awkward (a human equivalent pronunciation-wise of the dog on That's Life (showing my age here!) who said 'sausages'. I can imagine Scooby Doo saying Aurora, almost like a bark... Also, it might be shortened to Rory which is uglier than Aurora or Lola for me. Sorry I couldn't be more positive!

Based on the names you've said, maybe you'd like these: Penelope, Octavia, Claudia?

LeoandBoosmum · 18/04/2015 17:41

Also, maybe you'd like Lila based on your liking Lola? Lila Jane sounds quite nice and Lila isn't overused like Lola is (also no Barry Manilow or Kinks songs with their connotations) :)

TheScottishPlay · 18/04/2015 17:58

Aurora is lovely. She is the Goddess of the Dawn (long before she was a Disney Princess). Rory/ie is a fabulous shortening.
Not a fan of Lola ( too much Charlie and Lola with DS).
