If I love Nina and Maya for a girl.....what would be my son's name?

DH is from a Catholic background, I'm from a Muslim one. Both atheist.
DH is as British as it gets whereas I'm a wandering subcontinental.
Now we're having a baby boy and just cannot agree on a name!
Please help!

Combining (some) parts of our ridiculous lists of desirable features, we would prefer:

  • nothing overtly affiliated with Abrahamic religions in general
  • something that does pass with folks from my background as well as his, like Nina or Maya would for a girl
  • nothing with any 'hard' sounds like 'K'
  • something short
  • nothing clearly aligned with being British/American/European/Western nor Muslim/Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi

Ideally a name that 'passes' internationally where you'd have to meet the person before being remotely able to box him into an ethnicity.

I really liked Rafi but DH has vetoed :(
And I'm just blank after that.

I agree with Louis.

Most of them just sound so Western to my ears, they're lovely but I can't relate very much. It bothers me because I feel I'll have given up culture, country, last name etc - at least I could get an honourable mention with baby name, so to speak. DH disagrees btw and keeps slipping in Williams and Olivers!

In spite of that I do like Luca/Lucas (but DH says it's too Biblical), Aidan sounds sweet but DH is meh. Zain/Zane/Zayn is nice, though I don't care for a boy-band affiliation but DH doesn't care for it.

I thought Raif was nice (like the Saudi blogger, my heart goes out to him!) - but DH isn't going for it either.

Poor nameless offspring :(

Luca is not biblical, is it?

squoosh · 08/04/2015 18:11

Kamran?

I like your Raif and Rafi suggestions though. Shame they're out.

Linerunner, he's insisting it's from Luke so becomes part of the gang with Matthew, Mark & Co.

Oh, just noticed the 'no K names' criteria!

NameTheNewGuy · 08/04/2015 18:14

Hard 'K' in Kamran squoosh - though it does have special meaning for me...sadly it won't fly.

I'm sorry this is such a pain!
