If I love Nina and Maya for a girl.....what would be my son's name?

DH is from a Catholic background, I'm from a Muslim one. Both atheist.
DH is as British as it gets whereas I'm a wandering subcontinental.
Now we're having a baby boy and just cannot agree on a name!
Please help!

Combining (some) parts of our ridiculous lists of desirable features, we would prefer:

  • nothing overtly affiliated with Abrahamic religions in general
  • something that does pass with folks from my background as well as his, like Nina or Maya would for a girl
  • nothing with any 'hard' sounds like 'K'
  • something short
  • nothing clearly aligned with being British/American/European/Western nor Muslim/Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi

Ideally a name that 'passes' internationally where you'd have to meet the person before being remotely able to box him into an ethnicity.

I really liked Rafi but DH has vetoed :(
And I'm just blank after that.

Just to say I'm still here! Listening and pondering your suggestions and grateful for them!

Pick Zayd.

I can imagine Zayd being the cool kid in school who plays guitar and has great hair.

What about considering naming him after somebody famous!

Jensen (button, racer)
Lennon (John Lennon)

Do you have a favourite sports man? Singer?

Rafi is cute. I like it.

The problem is that names that are used in many cultures tend to have religious roots. There are more girls names: Nina, Maya, Miriam, Leila, Nora.

Adam fits your brief except it's biblical. Same with Joseph.

Isaac? Also biblical but less obviously so. Noah (v biblical!)

Omar
Eli
Karim
Sol (omon)
Nathan

Probably repeating those already mentioned but these may fit the brief:
Jay, Max, Sam, Leo, Sol, Harry/Hari, Dylan/Dillon, Alex, Lucas, Oscar, Nico?
Kai, Kit, Kim are good apart from the K,
How about Ray or Rafe rather than Rafi?
I was after a similar idea for my kids- if I had a daughter she would probably be Maya (and my sister is Nina!)

switchitoff · 03/07/2015 18:19

Just thought of some other DCs we know from a similar background:

Brothers: Finn and Luca

Ryan

Ash (short for Ashus)

Jay

Robin (can be short for Robindra if you like)
