Cordelia - too pretentious?

Is Cordelia too pretentious a name for a squarely middle class girl to pull off? I love it and DH is keen and there are some great nicknames (Cordy, Delia, Cora, CoCo etc) but I'm worried it's a bit pretentious. We live in a lovely town in the rural SW and she'll be going to the local state schools, I'm worried you need to be super posh or live in Islington or something to pull it off. Other name options are things like Elizabeth, Abigail etc. Thoughts?

I have a friend called this. She goes by Dee.
She's not posh or upper class, just a "normal" woman. Very few people actually call her Cordelia.

IvoryMadonna · 08/04/2015 14:43

No, you can't go far wrong with Shakespearean ladies. Desdemona might be pusing it a bit, but Cordelia's fine.

I love this name! I love the nn Della for Cordelia. Not pretentious at all.

thatstoast · 08/04/2015 14:50

I love Cordelia so much as a name. If I was middle class I'd do it but I'm very much working class. And I had a boy Wink

Crossfitmyarse · 08/04/2015 14:51

No, it's lovely.

DrLizAsher · 08/04/2015 14:55

Oh what lovely positive replies! Thanks everyone. birchwoods Della is lovely too, she'll be able to take her pick of lots of nicknames!

Not at all, and Delia is lovely and very underused IMO.

Minitant · 08/04/2015 14:57

Cordelia is lovely - Martin Luther King Jr's wife was Coretta, which I love as an alternative.

Chocolateorangegirl · 08/04/2015 14:59

Cordelia is lovely. I particularly like it as it's the name of a Joss Whedon character. Grin And Shakespeare of course.

woodhill · 08/04/2015 15:00

I like it, Cordelia Flyte in Brideshead

Sophronia · 08/04/2015 15:27

Gorgeous name, I know a child called Cordelia and everytime I see her I think what a lovely name. It was top of my list if we had a girl althoufg dh didn't like it (as he has awful taste in girls names) so lucky we had a boy!

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 08/04/2015 15:43

It's lovely.

VT82 · 08/04/2015 16:10

I like the name. Would go especially well if your surname is one syllable.

Allthatnonsense · 08/04/2015 18:36

I love, love, love Cordelia and all her nn potential.

sweetpeame · 08/04/2015 18:38

Cariad007 · 08/04/2015 18:39

Call her Anne and then she may want to change her name to Cordelia...

Allthatnonsense · 08/04/2015 18:43

But only if you spell Anne with an E.

motherinferior · 08/04/2015 18:44

And the divine

(OK, perhaps it's not the best lullabye but I'm the dame who nearly called her inner-city kid Delilah.)

charmund · 08/04/2015 18:49

Love it ! DD has it as a middle name but slightly wish we'd given it to her as a first name as it way prettier and more unusual than the one she has

littlehouseinthebigwoods · 08/04/2015 18:51

Ooh, what would marilla say??

Grin
