Do you think it's a bit odd to call our baby Angus if we are not Scottish, or is it okay? What do you think of the name?

...Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging.

Is what I think of when I hear Angus. Those books give my age away horribly though - they're not a universal cultural reference like something like Harry Potter would be.

TheRealMaryMillington · 02/04/2015 11:27

DS2 is called Angus, he's nearly 5 (DH is proper Scottish but we live in England)

It's a very manly name for a wee baby, but everyone seems to like it.

He can also dress up and call himself Spidermangus which is a bonus.

OnlyTheDepthVaries · 02/04/2015 12:45

I've got an Angus - now 13 years and sometimes known as Gus. Nothing Scottish about us...it's a great name

ditavonteesed · 02/04/2015 12:46

me coat up

sorry I do think its a lovely name but that is the phrase that springs to mind.

ThroughThickandThin · 02/04/2015 12:46

It's nice. I don't think you have to be Scottish.

HoppityVoosh · 02/04/2015 12:56

Angus is a wonderful name! One of my favourites but I do love it for its Scottish-ness. Our baby will be about as Scottish as they come with a Scottish surname and probably ginger hair too! I don't know if I'd use it as a non-Scot, the same way I wouldn't use a Welsh or Irish name. Plenty of people do though so I say use it!

Bazza2 · 02/04/2015 13:32

Thanks everyone. I do like it, just have a few reservations. And therealmarymillington you have given the best reason EVER to call him Angus. Spidermangus is brilliant.

noddyholder · 02/04/2015 19:09

I love it don't think you need to be scottish at all

OneMagnumisneverenough · 02/04/2015 19:13

You could have Magnus :)

technobabble · 02/04/2015 19:13

I think it's a fabulous name!

DramaAlpaca · 02/04/2015 19:14

It's a great name, even if you're not Scottish.

Go for it if you love it.

ByTheWishingWell · 02/04/2015 19:17

I think it's fantastic. DP is Scottish and rules it out for being too 'posh'. Confused

I also don't think you need to be Scottish, but am biased- our DD has a non-British name despite us both being British.

notsureaboutmaternityleave · 02/04/2015 19:18

I have a friend with Angus. I thought it was cool and they don't have Scottish ancestry!

littleomar · 02/04/2015 19:20

I still wish I'd called ds2 Angus, it would really have suited him. Chickened out cos we're not Scottish. Go for it I say.

Kittykatmacbill · 02/04/2015 21:04

Love it. But am Scottish and live in Scotland. Quite a lot of them about, I think Alexander has a similar feel but less overtly Scottish iyswim.

Incapinka · 02/04/2015 21:07

Angus rocks. As does Gus. Be aware that at some point someone may miss an important letter out of his name...

DameEdnasBridesmaid · 02/04/2015 21:09

It's my maiden name!

ChrisQuean · 02/04/2015 21:10

Lovely name. Go for it.

ConcreteElephant · 02/04/2015 22:11

I have an Angus. He's 13. We aren't Scottish. He's named for Angus Young.

he's a cat

I think it's a great boy's name. Really like it.

EthethethethChrisWaddle · 02/04/2015 22:38

It's a fab name - I love Fergus and Hamish too. Gus is a cool nickname and Spidermangus is even cooler!

avocadotoast · 02/04/2015 22:41

I really like it and we're not Scottish. DH is having none of it tho Sad

Bazza2 · 02/04/2015 22:58

Really like it. Scottish people are 'allowed' to use English names (and do), so I don't see why the reverse shouldn't be true.
