Dh and I were quite comfortable with Anastasia as a baby name for dd3 but with all of the hype for the 50 shades of grey movie we've realised its the same as the female lead.

Do you think of 50 shades for this name? Does it/ would it put you off?

Russian princess here (watched the cartoon today), I loved that period of history at school, if I'd had a baby at 17-25 she'd have been Anastasia, I do love the name (and Tatiana). Forgotten about the singer but yes, that would be the next association. Haven't read FSOG, haven't any desire to see the film either so no connection there for me. If anyone suggests it to you just look down your nose at them and say 'Oh, I have no desire to read a book about an abusive relationship dressed up as a romance'.

threepiecesuite · 15/02/2015 19:53

I know a couple of Anastasias who get called Stacy and Tasia respectively.
It is a bit of a mouthful.

projecting · 15/02/2015 19:55

No, 50 shades is so unutterably shite that in 5 years from now it will be a mere footnote. In fact not even that.

Worry not.

Buttercupsandaisies · 15/02/2015 20:05

There's one at our school and I have to say not a single person I know likes the name and all turn their nose up as it's seen as quite chavvy up north IMO. But if you like it that's all that matters.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 15/02/2015 20:07

I've read the first book but it was such tripe that I had completely forgotten (blocked out) her name. I wouldn't assume you had named your baby after her at all. I know a 4 year old Anastasia and it really suits her.

soonverysoon · 15/02/2015 21:37

Tasia is a lovely nn threepiece.

Roseformeplease · 15/02/2015 21:40

Worse than the book is the dreadful nickname of an Anastasia I knew "Stash" spoken by her friends in the plummets way and reminding us all of her Daddy's wealth.

Sorry!

soonverysoon · 15/02/2015 21:41

And Isadora I love the idea of a whole tribe of posh pussycats named after Russian royalty Grin!

SoonToBeSix · 16/02/2015 00:21

No it's spelt differently in the book and the singer.

mathanxiety · 16/02/2015 04:35

It's not an exclusively Russian name. It's Greek too, and was also popular in Ireland for many hundreds of years. There's a book called 'The Tailor and Ansty' (pr Anstee) by Eric Cross, about an old Irish couple living in the back of beyond...

It was a very popular name in my own Irish family over many generations, a tradition I carried on. The usual old-fashioned Irish version was the Latin Anastatia, sometimes shortened to Statia (pr Stay-sha).

I don't think people who watch the film will come away remembering the characters' names. I don't think the film itself will be remembered even a year from now.

In other words, if you like the name, go for it.

mathanxiety · 16/02/2015 04:37

And I also think it would go really well with Seraphina. It means 'resurrection'.

Sookster · 16/02/2015 07:33

Not read the books but I think it is a bit meh. As someone up-thread mentioned the chavs will have it and then everyone will be call Anastasia.

Says the woman who named her DD Madeleine after Gregory's sister in the movie Gregory's Girl. My DD was born in 1993 and since then there has been and explosion of Maddies, Maddisons, Madeleines and all the different spelling.

LetticeKnollys · 16/02/2015 07:38

No. Some people probably will, but I would hope not her peers at primary school!

coolaschmoola · 16/02/2015 07:40

It makes me think of Barbie, sorry.

Killasandra · 16/02/2015 07:45

I used to love the name. But then I heard how it's pronounced in Russian which is totally different to how it's pronounced in English and that put me off.

I don't think you can use it for the next 12 months or so. What about Natasha?

I love seraphina.

TheChickenSituation · 16/02/2015 08:19

Oh crikey, I seriously think Anastasia is too significant a name in its own right, for 50 Shades to put any sort of dent in it! Grin

Sure, people make that connection now. But in 3 or 4 days, when the furore has died down and no-one cares to remember what 50 Shades was even about and that poor Northern Irish lad looks in bewilderment at his tattered career, that connection will be well and truly lost.

Can anyone remember the name of a heroine from any other flash in the pan badly-written-book-to-movie from 5, 8, 10, 20 years ago...?

Rosieliveson · 16/02/2015 14:42

It's a beautiful name. It's been going through my head recently (not actually pregnant though!)
I have read 50 shades but the link hadn't occurred to me until I read your post. I don't think the book/movie will stand the test of time to be honest

reuset · 16/02/2015 22:29

No, never read that drivel I'm pleased to say.

I know two, both over 30 now. Both known as Stacie

Blahia · 17/02/2015 01:08

I didn't know her name is Anastacia, so no, I wouldn't make the link.

I think of the singer....

Blahia · 17/02/2015 01:20

*Anastasia

GettingFiggyWithIt · 17/02/2015 02:02

Lost princess
Singer
Is she not referred to as Ana a lot in fsog?
You could go for Nastassya but i think Anastasia sounds nicer with Seraphina which reminds me of a cat in barbie so there are always going to be associations with any name...
Aurelia is lovely.

diggerdigsdogs · 17/02/2015 05:35

Getting Figgy Aurelia is on our list too.

I have a loopy friend called Natasha so that is out. Dd3s name doesn't have to be Russian sounding at all Smile

Math I do like the Irish spelling, thanks for the tip!

Stacie is not a name I think I've ever heard here - I had no idea it was a nn for Anastasia!

NickNackNooToYou · 17/02/2015 06:52

My never to be daughter (I have two boys) would have been Anatasia or Louisa.

My immediate thought would be Russian princess and I went to see 50 SOG at the weekend, if you love it don't overthink Smile

NickNackNooToYou · 17/02/2015 06:53

Good job I had two boys as I clearly can't spell it Shock

corgiology · 17/02/2015 16:44

my first thought was the Disney film Anastasia

:)
