I really want to use Daphne...

Ok so I love the name Daphne. It's my favourite name. I think it's stylish, feminine and cool whilst also being a classic and recognised name.

Judging by other mumsnet threads lots of you also like this name, so why have I never met one?

Is it because it's a name that people love to admire on others, but couldn't live with?
I'm worried that she would be called Daffy duck through school and hate me for it. There's no natural shortening that isn't Daffy and that is an issue that puts me off.

So do any of you know or have a Daphne? If so is it shortened? Does she like her name? Is she bullied? Tell me all!

TIA

My Daphne is 2.5 and a pain in the bum! We call her DeeDee for short. Never had a negative comment and obviously we love the name. Go for it!

SavoyCabbage · 12/01/2015 21:20

I think it's lovely. I wouldn't let Daffy put me off if I loved it as you just don't know what's going to happen with nicknames.

A totally different one might evolve (pixie, boo, Minnie- all names in my circle) or you could engineer your own nickname Née Née or Dee.

Only1scoop · 12/01/2015 21:21

I love it. Go for it.

muttonjeffmum · 12/01/2015 21:21

My auntie is called Daphne and I think the name is really cool. Good never spell it as a child but that's a by the way!

cosmicglittergirl · 12/01/2015 21:21

I know two Daphnes both 16 months. (One Greek) I think it's a great name, go for it.

Pipbin · 12/01/2015 21:22

I love it. And what kids have heard of Daffy Duck these days?

LovethenameDaphne · 12/01/2015 21:23

Great reactions so far! Nauseous kitty - Deedee is cute, I like that! Smile

Just recently had a thread about Daphne in Baby Names, I'll see if I can find it. Hang on.

Quangle · 12/01/2015 21:26

I've got an auntie Daphne too. muttonjeff are we related? Mine was far from posh but an absolute stickler for table manners. I'm still scared of her.

Great name though OP.

fukkigucci · 12/01/2015 21:27

My 3 year old niece is daphne. It never gets shortened. And it's cute!

fufulina · 12/01/2015 21:27

I met a toddler daphne a few months ago. She was gorgeous, and I loved her name :)

Mintyy · 12/01/2015 21:29

here you go.

But be warned, op, I have a 100% track record in choosing slightly obscure baby names that suddenly become top 1 or top 2 by the time the child reaches school.

So I predict a huge rise in Daphnes.

How about Zinnia?

LovethenameDaphne · 12/01/2015 21:30

Loving the reactions! I love the meaning too and history behind it.
Out of interest do you prefer Daphne or Penelope?

Grin minty!

Zinnia is lovely too actually, it's another one that I've considered. I have never met or heard of one except on mumsnet though. Will read thread now!

Daphne and Penelope were best friends in "To the Manor Born" I think?..

(leaves to Google)

FrancisdeSales · 14/01/2015 21:39

No, Audrey and Marjory - Penelope and Daphne were the actors real names!

Artandco · 14/01/2015 21:42

I like it

Also Delphine

Allstoppedup · 14/01/2015 21:43

Would never have even thought of Daffy as I nn/shortening of Daphne ( I do think of Scooby Doo though!Blush)

I actually think it's a lovely name though, I like Dee Dee and even Daf!

Stoneysilence · 14/01/2015 21:56

My niece is called Zinnia, it gets shortened to Zinny or Zin. It's cool and unusual but you get funny looks sometimes calling her from across the playground!

Quangle · 14/01/2015 22:07

Marjory was Angela Thorne. This is the stuff I carry round in my head instead of anything useful. I can hear her now "Oh Aud!" In her posh voice.

LovethenameDaphne · 14/01/2015 22:09

Zinny is a cool nick name! I still think I prefer Daphne but much prefer Zinny to Daph/Daffy.

There's a Daphne at my son's nursery! She's 2. I love the name :)

LovethenameDaphne · 14/01/2015 22:12

I've also never seen Scooby Doo or Frasier, so I have no associations except for a vague memory of a malory towers character!!

Daphne was Darrell's little sister, wasn't she? From the archives of useless knowledge lodged in my brain....

burgatroyd · 15/01/2015 10:31

I know an adult Daphne who changed her name as an adult.
