I really want to use Daphne...

Ok so I love the name Daphne. It's my favourite name. I think it's stylish, feminine and cool whilst also being a classic and recognised name.

Judging by other mumsnet threads lots of you also like this name, so why have I never met one?

Is it because it's a name that people love to admire on others, but couldn't live with?
I'm worried that she would be called Daffy duck through school and hate me for it. There's no natural shortening that isn't Daffy and that is an issue that puts me off.

So do any of you know or have a Daphne? If so is it shortened? Does she like her name? Is she bullied? Tell me all!

TIA

When I was expecting DD2 my eldest proudly announced to the lollipop lady at school "When the daffodils come, that's when my baby's coming too". I thought it was just the sweetest thing! I didn't use it because we already had a firm choice but I think it's lovely.

Re: shortenings, if you just put the shortening that you want to use on any birth announcement I've found that people use it. Believe me, we have a Winifred (Winnie) and an Isabel (Isa/zsazsa NOT izzywizzyletsgetbusy or anything like that!) and that approach seems to work.

No, Darrel's LS was Felicity. It was Sally who had the LS called Daphne!

I need to get out more.

LovethenameDaphne · 15/01/2015 14:22

I actually checked wiki to see who Daphne was and I now think all children should be named after Malory towers characters!

Felicity was Darrell's little sister... My DD is named Felicity partly for that reason. There was a Daphne though... Sally's sister?

Oops should read all the posts before posting myself... I was just too eager to correct you OP Smile.

LovethenameDaphne · 15/01/2015 18:23

Smile now Darrell is a name you don't hear often!

When I was younger and a massive Malory Towers fan I loved the name Alicia for a potential daughter!

weegiemum · 15/01/2015 19:34

I'll buck the trnd, I think it's awful!

MissHJ · 15/01/2015 19:34

My 75 year old grandma is called Daphne so it's not really a name I imagine for a young girl but if you like it then go for it

Mrsfrumble · 15/01/2015 19:50

I stand corrected on my Mallory Towers genealogy!

I loved those books and used to think Darrell was the coolest girl's name ever.

Daphne is one of those names that I would use myself, but I'd admire the cool of someone who did for choosing something a little unusual without being pretentious or wacky for the sake of it. I've met a little Desmond and a baby Sybil recently, and I felt the same about those names.

Mrsfrumble · 15/01/2015 19:52

Oops, I meant I wouldn't use myself, but would admire someone who did!

baskingseals · 16/01/2015 18:18

I know a 12 yo Daphne. She is one of the best people I know.
It is a fantastic name op.

ChickenMe · 18/01/2015 11:34

I love Daphne and nn Daffy. So cute and different.

Frikadellen · 18/01/2015 15:34

I completely adore the name Daphne but we named dd1 Phoebe at the time Friends and Frasier were both very happening. (Phoebe is actually after JD Salingers "The catcher in the rye" not friends) So when dd2 came along we could not go with Daphne but it is one of my favourite names.

I loathe Pheebs and my Phoebe is 17 no one calls her that in my hearing. It is about accepting the nm too.

TidyDancer · 18/01/2015 20:10

I'm with weegiemum on this one I'm afraid. It's totally not for me, I think it sounds harsh (and I am usually a fan of the older style names).

DaphneMoonCrane · 18/01/2015 20:15

I love it Grin

I would have used it but I had two boys. So now it's my MN name and the name of my future cat

honeysucklejasmine · 18/01/2015 20:21

I love the names from Mallory Towers. I would love to use Sally, but also a fan of Daphne and Belinda. Sadly dh grandmother is called Daphne and he thinks it would be weird to use it, and hates Belinda. no taste Anyway, we already have a girls first name we both love, so maybe I can squeeze in Sally as a middle name.

MehsMum · 18/01/2015 20:24

I mentioned Daphne the other night on a thread about names you love but will never use (DH vetoed it).

So, obviously, I love it. I have only ever known one: when I was a very small child, two retired maiden ladies, Daphne and Peggy, lived up the road from us. We moved, but carried on visiting them (until they died, I think: they must both have been born c1900, if not before). They were both lovely, retired teachers who kept terriers and had a gorgeous garden. One of them wrote and illustrated a little storybook about an elf for me (since lost, sadly).

So Daphne, as a name, has nothing but positive connotations as far as I'm concerned. Go for it!

LovethenameDaphne · 18/01/2015 21:02

Love hearing people's stories Smile I'm glad so many people like it, I thought it would be far more mixed.

I'm sorry but I think it's one of the worst names out there. I would HATE to be called Daphne. also just makes me think of daphne broon!

LovethenameDaphne · 18/01/2015 21:27

No need to apologise I wanted honesty. All the best names seem to polarise opinion IMO. If everyone loved it it would be bland and be in the top ten.

zukiecat · 18/01/2015 22:54

Sorry I don't like the name at all, don't mean to be rude but I just think of Daphne Broon.

wesH · 19/01/2015 08:32

Personally find it a very vapid, ugly name
