Effy - what could it be short for?

Just to say, I'm not pregnant or ttc currently. I've just been thinking about the name Effy.
There was a character on skins with this name, and then I heard someone on the radio today with it too.

What could it be short for?

Euphemia, Euphegenia ...like Mrs Doubtfire. :o

fuckweasel · 02/01/2015 15:54

A diminutive of Euphemia is Effy/Effie.

Brandysnapper · 02/01/2015 15:54

Elizabeth I think.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 02/01/2015 15:54

Elphaba

Tbh Id just use Effie but then my DD has a shortened version of a name as I didnt want her name to be the longer version.

FatAmy · 02/01/2015 15:55

I think she was called Elizabeth but I'm not sure

BMO · 02/01/2015 15:55

I have a feeling the Skins character was Elizabeth.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 02/01/2015 15:57

I thought it was Elizabeth, but then doubted myself. Thanks.

Efrata or Evelyn as well as the above

MissMillament · 02/01/2015 16:01

Effie Millais was Euphemia. Don't know how you get Effie from Elizabeth tbh.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 02/01/2015 16:02

MissMillament! Slight derail, but are you currently wearing a mustard coloured cardigan stained with egg and your fathers spectacles?

There have been a lot of names I've never heard before here, thanks.

Evangeline, Eve

AuntieStella · 02/01/2015 16:04

It's the trad NN for Euphemia, which is a splendid name.

MissMillament · 02/01/2015 16:06

I am! Love those books! I have cheated with the name slightly though - someone had already got it (and doesn't use it) so I had to change it by one letter.

mrsmilkymoo · 02/01/2015 16:08

Had a neighbour with this name, short for Euphemia.

Lindy2 · 02/01/2015 16:09

I'm not sure if I've spelt this correctly but I thought it could be a shortening of Persephone. I do know an Effie where that is actually just her full name so it isn't always short for anything.

Happypogostick · 02/01/2015 16:10

Aoife? (Irish name pronounced ee-fa)

GloriousGloria · 02/01/2015 16:16

I was going to say Aoife

I know an Aoife who is called Effy for short.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 02/01/2015 16:17

You lot are wonderful, thanks. I love Aoife and Elizabeth so I think I'll tell myself it's one of those.

Aphra, my beautiful dd's name!

BananaToast · 02/01/2015 19:23

I know an Effie short for Felicity.

CosmicDespot · 02/01/2015 19:35

I've only known a male Effy, short for Ephraim.

KatieKaye · 02/01/2015 21:25

It's a traditional nickname for Euphemia.

Other NNs for Euphemia are Phemie (pronounced "fay-may") and Faye.

Out of the three, Faye is the only one I like. Effie and Phemie just conjure of images of stout older women trundling off to the steamie with a pram full of laundry.

purplegirl16 · 04/01/2015 15:17

Pretty sure the skins character was an Elizabeth

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/01/2015 15:38

Yy skins character was called Elizabeth

TheOnlyWayIsLindt · 04/01/2015 16:13

The Effie is know has Grace as her 'real' name. Not sure hi wit got shortened to Effie.
