Thoughts on Tyburn?

My other half and I are massive London history fans and are thinking of Tyburn as a first name for our baby boy. It's one of the names of Londons original rivers and was also the original name for Oxford St called Tyburn Road.
Yes it does also have a reference to the gallows at Tyburn cross! But we're not put off by that. Pronounced tie - burn.
Short would be Ty.
Horrified? :) Our other current faves are Larkin, Efra or Sachin.

I think it's a (not nice) area of Birmingham.

MinnieM1 · 28/12/2014 11:59

Just horrid
Don't do it

petitdonkey · 28/12/2014 11:59

I quite like it actually - DH has a cousin Tymon who is generally known as Ty and I really love it. (or maybe it's just because I really love him!)

Llareggub · 28/12/2014 11:59

It just reminds me of Taybarns where people gorge themselves silly. Awful.

perplexedpirate · 28/12/2014 12:00

Tyburn Tree. Horrible associations. Just no.

pookamoo · 28/12/2014 12:00

Larkin is much better.

SirChenjin · 28/12/2014 12:01

Umm...

The only thing I can think to say about it is that up here in Scotland a burn is a stream - so it sounds like you've named him after a stream. Like Bannockburn.

Also sounds similar to Tyrone - which I'm not keen on.

StandByYourTesselators · 28/12/2014 12:02

You might not be put off by it, but a name with such awful provenance is a bit cruel to saddle a child with. Good name for a thrash metal band... but not a baby!

Lindalove · 28/12/2014 12:04

Yes Tyburn is a very old London river, so burn reference is also good. It is naming him after a river! Husband is Scottish too.
Never heard of Taybarns!

Didn't they display severed heads there?

Tiredemma · 28/12/2014 12:05

Its a shit 'grill' pub in North Bham

Magicrealism · 28/12/2014 12:06

Just makes me think of executions.

Lindalove · 28/12/2014 12:09

Tyburn Tree was where they hung highwaymen etc. in those days it was entertainment and a popular day out!
I'm not naming a baby I'm naming a man - he'll be a man longer than a wee infant.

It's the sight of hangings. Awful name for that reason- there's a monastery there where they still pray for the martyrs.

SantasBassoon · 28/12/2014 12:12

Most people think of the gallows when they hear Tyburn. A name that is so strongly associated with capital punishment might be unwanted by your child as they grow up.

harryhausen · 28/12/2014 12:14

God no. Tyburn is the most famous place for hanging people. Also, I'm pretty sure they used to hang, draw and quarter people there for treason too. Awful.

Reindeerballs · 28/12/2014 12:14

Sorry I immediately associate it with Tyburn the execution site and not the river. I am also an historian. In respect of the others - I met a Sachin (pr. Satch in) recently who was lovely. Larkin sounds like larking about

DrElizabethPlimpton · 28/12/2014 12:14

Please don't. It just reminds me of executions. Tymon is much better.

munchkin2902 · 28/12/2014 12:14

People were hung, drawn and quartered there. Please don't do it, there are so many nice unusual names! Efra is good.

PunkrockerGirl · 28/12/2014 12:14

Just horrible.

Theenduringmoment · 28/12/2014 12:16

How about Golgotha for a middle name. Or maybe Gibbet.

Lindalove · 28/12/2014 12:16

Efra is my joint favourite! Sounds like it might be slightly more acceptable to the average person :)
Sachin is actually after Sachin Tendulkar the cricketer.
Not heard of the name Tymon, will look it up.

I was thinking Gallows as a middle name. JOKE!
