Thoughts on Tyburn?

My other half and I are massive London history fans and are thinking of Tyburn as a first name for our baby boy. It's one of the names of Londons original rivers and was also the original name for Oxford St called Tyburn Road.
Yes it does also have a reference to the gallows at Tyburn cross! But we're not put off by that. Pronounced tie - burn.
Short would be Ty.
Horrified? :) Our other current faves are Larkin, Efra or Sachin.

The River Effra has two ffs.

How about Fleet?

Sophronia · 28/12/2014 14:14

I like Tybalt or Larkin.

InfinitySeven · 28/12/2014 14:20

I know two Tyburns, both in their 20s in London. They like their names.

HoHonutty · 28/12/2014 14:22

Tyburn, Harvester, McDonald's...

TheFourthLobster · 28/12/2014 14:26

Sideburn......

clary · 28/12/2014 14:26

Tybalt is much nicer OP and has the easy nickname of Ty :)

KoalaDownUnder · 28/12/2014 14:28

I much prefer Balonz.

CheeseBuster · 28/12/2014 14:30

What will people think of his family of he sounds as though he's named after an execution location? They'll think your either gothic butters or just idiots who don't know what tyburn references. It's along the same lines as naming a baby adolf in my view.

CheeseBuster · 28/12/2014 14:31

Tybalt is cool though.

SophieBarringtonWard · 28/12/2014 14:32

The river Effra has two fs, btw.

I have known two female Efra/Effra, so for me it is a girls name! But nice.

Lindalove · 28/12/2014 14:46

cheese I am an idiot gothic butter.

If you Google Efra it comes up as a boys name mainly? I don't mind unisex names though

infinity seriously you know two Tyburns? Cool!

wadjet78 · 28/12/2014 14:58

Efra is much nicer.

petitdonkey · 28/12/2014 15:00

Linda -as far as I know Tymon was totally made up. DHs aunt said that the cord was tied so they wanted something to reflect that, didn't like Tyler so crossed it with Simon! It's like a Mumsnet nightmare but Ty is 32 now and I think it's a cool name. (they are American if that is relevant)

Quangle · 28/12/2014 16:20

I'm in Marble Arch too so it's a total yikes from me too. Love Quaggy. Brilliant. Fleet is good too.

florascotia · 28/12/2014 17:01

Tymon is alternative spelling of Timon, an ancient Greek name that means 'honour' or 'esteem'. Also the title of a play part-written by Shakespeare (Timon of Athens).

Have you thought about Smithfield? Xmas Smile

More seriously, Tybalt or Tymon sound a better idea to me.

beatricequimby · 29/12/2014 22:20

Please don't call your baby Tyburn. In ten years time he might be reading about it in Horrible Histories and having nightmares. Sachin is great. A proper name, unusual but not too unusual. Sachin Tendulkar is a cool person to be named after.

moxon · 30/12/2014 05:09

Damn I was going to suggest both tybalt and pimlico.

Aussiemum78 · 30/12/2014 05:26

Matthias can have the nn Tye.

VixxenPlusAllTheOtherReindeers · 30/12/2014 08:11

why not just Ty? or Thai.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 30/12/2014 08:19

My first thought was the horrible histories Tyburn Jig song. With actions.

Me too :)

Bobby1234 · 30/12/2014 17:46

Taybarns, not a fan sorry

marshmallowpies · 30/12/2014 17:58

I live near the Effra and wouldn't be put off by the fact it's now in a sewer - most of the hidden rivers of London are these days, it's no surprise! Fleet is also pretty cool though would be more of a middle name contender for me.
