Thoughts on Tyburn?

Lindalove · 28/12/2014 11:57

My other half and I are massive London history fans and are thinking of Tyburn as a first name for our baby boy. It's one of the names of Londons original rivers and was also the original name for Oxford St called Tyburn Road.
Yes it does also have a reference to the gallows at Tyburn cross! But we're not put off by that. Pronounced tie - burn.
Short would be Ty.
Horrified? :) Our other current faves are Larkin, Efra or Sachin.

It's totally ghastly. Please don't.

silveroldie2 · 28/12/2014 12:22

Vile, ghastly, horrible - your child will hate you.

Admiraltea · 28/12/2014 12:27

Fab you could create a whole new theme of names...brothers Newgate, Smithfield and Pentonville with their sister Holloway.

You'd have a gate, field, town and lane to go with your river....alternatively you could name a girl Bedlam...derived from St Mary of Bethlehem so nice and festive.

Seriouslyffs · 28/12/2014 12:32

Effra would be lovely

TinklyLittleLaugh · 28/12/2014 12:32

Great name but too much of a gallows association. I wanted to name DS1 Tyler, after Wat Tyler, but DH was having none of it.

WeThreeKeemasofOrientNaan · 28/12/2014 12:36

Christ on a bike.

First thing i thought of was the Tyburn Jig, the name given to the people choking to death as they hanged.

BLEURGH.

clary · 28/12/2014 12:36

Tyburn just says the gallows to me, not a nice association.

I know a young Sachin, that's a much nicer name IMO.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 28/12/2014 12:37

A quick google of Effra bring up lots of sewer connotataions though, and if you call him Larkin, well most people only know the, "They fuck you up" line. But I like your thinking OP, sure you'll come up with something fab.

Middleoftheroad · 28/12/2014 12:39

We have Tyburn in Birmingham. Google that first x

Tykeisagirl · 28/12/2014 12:43

If you're a fan of the rivers of London books Tyburn is a woman's name, and Lady Ty(burn) is not a very nice person.

Unknownrebelbang · 28/12/2014 12:46

Sounds like a wind-up tbh.

TheFourthLobster · 28/12/2014 12:48

I suppose it'd give you a good photo opportunity when he is older....

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 28/12/2014 12:51

LOOOOOL

lots of other London rivers you could name him after

Lee
Quaggy
Deptford Creek

CinnabarRed · 28/12/2014 12:54

Peckham Springs...

Admiraltea · 28/12/2014 12:58

Wandle and Ravensbourne...love Quaggy!!!

florascotia · 28/12/2014 12:59

Even as an adult, why would anyone want a name that instantly brought all this to mind?: www.oldbaileyonline.org/static/JourneyTyburn.jsp

As others have said, there are plenty of other London rivers - much better known, as well. What about Fleet (as in Fleet Street)? That has much more positive associations.

Admiraltea · 28/12/2014 13:02

Oooh oooh me! me! just found Mutton Brook..try saying it an Sean Connery voice.....

florascotia · 28/12/2014 13:02

As well as Tymon (or Timon, as in the Shakespeare play), Tybalt/Tybbald would also give nn 'Ty'

eurochick · 28/12/2014 13:02

I also instantly thought of hangings. Why would you do that to a child?!?

Admiraltea · 28/12/2014 13:03

(a not an)...

"My name is Brook, Mutton Brook"

StickyProblem · 28/12/2014 13:06

How about
Lee Guillotine

Lindalove · 28/12/2014 13:07

Okay I knew it might be controversial but seems it's not a marmite name - most people hate it! This is why mumsnet is good for reality checks. As I dnt live in reality most of the time.

Loving Mutton Brook though. :)

Seriously do like Efra (which is also a proper name not just a river) though.

Tybalt is a cool replacement!

I don't like the images it conjures up.
This is why I didn't name DS after a river that is special to me.
Spey doesn't have much of a ring to it.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 28/12/2014 13:10

Fleet is rather nice actually.

TheFourthLobster · 28/12/2014 13:10

I suppose you could name him after a different part of London, how about Pimlico?
