Poppy

DH and I are going around in circles on girls' names. I had thought of Poppy but discounted it as although lovely for a little girl, not sure I think it would suit a grown woman. But names like Holly, Daisy, Rosie etc are similar and mainstream enough so maybe....? It's in the same vein as Chloe & Lola both of which I adore but not sure I'd use (Chloe coz so popular and Lola coz of the bloody kinks!)

I've seen it mentioned on here as a nickname for Penelope which is also on our list but seems bit of a stretch to me, penny the obvious nickname I think.

So what are people's thoughts on Poppy? Sibling are Noah & Sophia.

I know a lot of Poppy's so a bit common for me. I am sure it will be ok for grown ups by the time your dd is older. Must admit when I first heard it though I did ask myself does it pass the - this girl could be taken seriously as prime minister test with a resounding NO! But times change!

I think Poppy is more popular than Chloe these days, they seem to be everywhere.

It's not my cup of tea but as the name is so hugely popular at the moment I'm sure there will be Poppys in every walk of life thirty years from now.

Sorry should say am in Ireland and it's not popular here at all. Not in top 100 and I've never come across one or even heard of one in 5 years of playgroups etc

2 Poppys in DS class at school. It's a nice name but I agree about the grown up woman bit. But by then there will be thousands of grown up Poppys.

With Noah and Sophia, I like Hannah or Emma.

I have a Poppy. She is the only Poppy in her year group of 45. The mega popular names here seem to be Millie, Lily & Maisie (for 3 & 4 year olds).

When we chose the name Poppy, I had only met one other - and she was about 25 at the time. Part of the reason I liked the name so much was because it really did suit the adult I knew as much as it suits a baby.

In 25/30 years time our Drs, dentists, school teachers, lawyers etc. will be called Poppy, Lily, Alfie, Daisy, Bobby etc. and no-one will think anything of it.

I say, if you really like the name then use it.

I think Poppy is a lovely name for a child or adult and it goes lovely with your other dc's names. You'll always have people who don't like these kind of names who say they are babyish but I just ignore them (dd is Daisy).

Yes have Penelope, known as poppy. I like both.

Poppy was a real contender for me... Until I looked at the stats, it's on the 10 most popular girls names lists for every county in the UK except for London last year. I discounted it straight away. Love penny, but not sure about Penelope.

Poppy is too cutesy for my taste.

I also think that Penelope goes much better with Noah & Sophia.

It's not a real name to my mind.
Can't see why Poppy is a stretch as a nn for Penelope. It starts with P and ends with "oppy" so seems pretty obvious to me.

Thanks all. Still no closer to deciding! Not in the UK so it's popularity there not a factor.

I think penny is the obvious nickname for Penelope so Poppy would be a "forced" nickname or something. But don't think I'd call her just Poppy, can't reconcile it with a grown up so I guess if I want Poppy, that's how I'll get it!

Or else she'll be Chloe. Or Amaya. Or Lola. Or Willow. Or Rebecca.

I like it and, as you say, it's not a much used name here in Ireland. I don't know one single child called Poppy.

I sort of see what you mean, but, for example, I think Liz or Lizzie are the natural nns for ELizabeth. However I wouldn't say that Beth, Eliza, Betty, Libby etc are "forced" nns, just not the most obvious.

What about Polly (Pollyanna?)

I have a poppy and get lovely comments,
Her middle name is Delilah which is is often met with faces, but I think it's a gorgeous name in its own right.
She does often get 'Pops, the popster, or occasionally y' big fat ladybird'...... Not so keen on the last, but she is 9-12 mo clothes at 7mo

I think Poppy is a lovely name and I don't see why it wouldn't age well.

You had Amaya on your list there, how about Amaris? It is also biblical (Hebrew) so would be a good match with Noah but also has a possible Greek link with Maris which would match well with Sophia

I'm not personally a fan of Poppy and the ilk but agree in the future there will be lots of adult Poppys Daisys etc so it wont seem as odd as it does at the moment.

Out of the similar suggestions Polly is probably nicer than Penny but I don't think it goes as nicely with Noah and Sophia. Polly is a common diminutive of Mary.

Too popular. I would go for Polly instead.
