What do you think about the name Lola? I quite like it but something is holding me back...

Apart from the Kinks song and the Barry Manilow song?

KatieKaye · 26/11/2014 07:58

Her name was Loka, she was a showgirl...!
Sorry

MollyBdenum · 26/11/2014 08:02

I know an adult and a child Lola. They are both lovely. The adult is a scientist, not a showgirl.

BikeRunSki · 26/11/2014 08:02

Showgirl
Transvestite

I know a few aged about 2 to 9, but my defaults are the Lolas made infamous in song.

florascotia · 26/11/2014 08:05

Short for Dolores, which is short for Maria de Dolores ((Virgin) Mary of Sorrows).

Famous old cabaret song (Marlene Dietrich) 'They call me naughty Lola...'

PoppyAmex · 26/11/2014 08:16

Yep, a nickname for Dolores.

sillymillyb · 26/11/2014 08:23

She is Charlie's sister, or a show girl... Sorry!

LidlMermaid · 26/11/2014 08:27

I love it but in my head it has stripper associations so I used it for my dog and called my DD something else.

pinkhousesarebest · 26/11/2014 08:31

Much loved by the trendys in France, though it seems to have peaked (most Lolas I know are upper primary).

GoodboyBindleFeatherstone · 26/11/2014 08:34

Transvestite picking up unsuspecting young men in bars.

"Lola" by the Kinks. Great song though Grin.

Doublethecuddles · 26/11/2014 08:36

Just think of " Charlie and Lola!" Sorry

DurhamDurham · 26/11/2014 08:38

I like it for a little girls but not quite so sure about it for an actual grown up person. It's not a very 'substantial' name.

Just asked dh and he started singing the song, the rubbish song by Barry rather than the good one by the Kinks.

JimmyCorkhill · 26/11/2014 09:24

Call her Dolores (love it!) and Lola for a nickname. Then if anyone is snotty about Lola you can say "actually, her name is Dolores." God, I am really loving Dolores. Need another DD now Grin

KERALA1 · 26/11/2014 09:27

Never understood the popularity - manages to be both seedy and insubstantial. How can you hold a gorgeous newborn and name her Lola?! Feel the same about Scarlett

shakemysilliesout · 26/11/2014 09:35

I know a few little Lola's- don't like it much. Delores is ok. Was that the name of whoopi goldbergs character in sister act? Wasn't she a showgirl in that movie? Fair play to try and reclaim the name Lola though.

Mammanat222 · 26/11/2014 13:55

Tell me about Lola

She was a showgirl, with yellow feathers in her hair

Or yes a transvestite (my fave Kinks song, in-fact one of my fave songs ever)

shoobidoo · 26/11/2014 14:03

Really dislike it, sorry.

Dolores or Delilah is ok.

DealForTheKids · 26/11/2014 14:12

My friend has a kitten called Lola.

Completely agree up thread about the fact it manages to be both seedy and insubstantial!

squoosh · 26/11/2014 14:21

Yep, I think it's too sexy a name for a baby. It's the kind of name people adopt in a ummmm, showbiz career. Of the dancing variety.

WD41 · 26/11/2014 15:19

Showgirls and transvestites

Also too similar to Lolita for my liking.

TempsPerdu · 26/11/2014 15:49

'Seedy and insubstantial' sums it up perfectl for me! I too get either Barry Manilow or Charlie and Lola. And I think all of the Lola/Lila/Lily type names are on their way out now anyway.

burgatroyd · 26/11/2014 19:10

Delores...Lolita...Lola...

Far too sexy!

I am crazy about Lolita, but can't call my DD that for obvious reasons (due in March)... I think it's so great though!!! Am I weird?
