Hello everyone :) trying to come up with an outdoorsy sounding boys name. Our surname is James.

So far we have the following
Lake, Harbor, Finch and North.

Any opinions on those? or other suggestions

Thanks :D

I think if you name him something like North or Finch, people will assume James is the first name. James North or James Finch sound more like a name than North James or Finch James. I have a colleague called Matthew James and he often gets replies starting dear James. I think this would be even more the case if the first name was not a conventional name.
I do think with your surname you need something like Finn which is more recognisably a first name.

Love your ideas. Have you thought about explorer type names or the names of iconic places?

Bowlersarm · 20/11/2014 18:29

Lake James, Harbor James, North James all sound like a place not a person.

Archer.
Hayden.
Brook.

Lake James sounds like a resort.

I'd put a 3 syllable name with James.

Dominic, Nicholas, Barnaby
or
Patrick
Frederick

The only out door name I can think of is Glenn but Glenn James sounds awful

Very curious (and intrigued) what makes some of these names outdoorsy Hmm - Luke, Tor, Orson...?!

Just choose a name you love!

LittleBairn · 20/11/2014 21:18

Lake James sounds like a location not a persons name.

Wolf
Oakley
Amos (NN Moss)
Elm
Hunter
Bear

BikeRunSki · 20/11/2014 21:28

Name him after a mountain?
(Cadair) Idris
Mickelden (Mick)
Snowdon
(Kinder) Scout

Or after an explorer...
Robert/Falcon/Scott
Ernest (Shakelton)
Livingston
Marco (Polo)

Or rivers...
Calder
Aire
Humber
(Running out of inspiration on this one, can you tell I'm in Yorkshire?)

But I agree that anything that is not obviously a first name will be assumed to be a surname when paired with James.

spamanderson · 20/11/2014 21:33

One of my customers had a son called Foxe and I thought it was awesome! I love the strong, outdoorsy names. What about surnamey names?
Not sure these all fit but they're some of my favourites
Gray/Grayson
Harrison
Hunter
Archer
Asher
Wade
Reed/Reid
Clarke
Caden
Cole

Any place names that mean something to you?
