Me and DH came up with this name in the pub last night for our hypothetical 3rd and last. We both really like Doris and it fits in with our other DD's names, but then realised it sounds a bit like Doris Day! Mae would just be a middle name not a hypenated name so would it really matter? Or it is does can you suggest one syllable middle names that go with Doris? We already have a Bea.

I actually like Dorit, Tessa, Ivy, Violet, Edith but all vetoed by DH (though there is a glimpse of hope on Violet but one of our other DD's is also a flower name)

Basically think old lady names especially with an s sound in.
:)

(Hypothetical boy name is Alfred John)

Bertha! If I have another child I will call her Bertha! For £500.00 pound sponsor from Mumsnet. Her middle names will be Rose Grace Maii

squoosh · 19/11/2014 19:59

Oh burgatroyd you seem like a lovely person but I dread to think what your kids are called.

I say dread in the nicest possible way.

burgatroyd · 19/11/2014 19:59

No to Bertha but I do like Brenda. I also like Eartha.

WowserBowser · 19/11/2014 19:59

*Atticus

AmeliaPeabody · 19/11/2014 20:00

Or you could have Mavis, kind of, a combination of the two

burgatroyd · 19/11/2014 20:01

Squoosh my kids are called Jane and John.

squoosh · 19/11/2014 20:04

Do you promise?

I'm sitting her worried you've got a Cyril and a Helga at home.

squoosh · 19/11/2014 20:05

And now someone suggests Mavis...........

WowserBowser · 19/11/2014 20:05

I told my husband's best friend that John is like being called 'boy'

I regret that, Jane and John are so much more interesting than Daisy-Mae

AmeliaPeabody · 19/11/2014 20:11

It was tongue in cheek! Probably not obvious as I did mention not minding Doris, though not to my own taste...

burgatroyd · 19/11/2014 20:13

Will pm you the names!

burgatroyd · 19/11/2014 20:20

OK so please explain why Alice is popular but not Doris. Both have the is ending. Its so weird. Have you noticed there are hardly any d names in classrooms now?
Bring back the D names!

CruCru · 19/11/2014 20:23

I don't know why but it makes me think of middle aged Chinese women who have moved to the UK and have adopted an English name for convenience.

BigfootFilesHisToesInYourTea · 19/11/2014 20:31

Doris is a genus of sea slug.

100% true.

I have cousins called John and Jane.

Doris makes me think of two things:

  1. The enormous beer-drinking pig from the Australian soap A Country Practice.
  1. The lingerie department supervisor at Debrnhams in a Belle and Sebastian song.

I lied. It also sort of makes me think of the word 'orifice'. Though that may just be me, I think the same about Maurice which I similarly dislike.

natureplantar101 · 20/11/2014 01:00

Doris is ok. but YY to May Mae Mai been done to death just drop that bit its done already 9/10 babies to 6 year olds i encounter are slammed with it along with Lillie/Lexi/Elli Blush its embarrassing for them

natureplantar101 · 20/11/2014 01:01

SurfsUp1 · 20/11/2014 08:46

Doris sounds like Boris.

Alice sounds like Alistair.

Other than an "is" sound at the end they have completely different sounds and feels.

PomPomPingPong · 20/11/2014 11:56

Doris was King Herod's first wife.

TheGirlAtTheRockShow · 20/11/2014 12:23

I don't get this whole "it's an old lady name" thing. The elderly were babies once. Personally I don't think you should name a baby based on "fashion trends" or because it may or may not sound dated in a few years time. Surely you choose a name because you like it? Unless it's something offensive of course. Doris is not offensive.
I knew some lovely Doris's.
If you like Doris Mae then go with it.
