Doris Mae?

Me and DH came up with this name in the pub last night for our hypothetical 3rd and last. We both really like Doris and it fits in with our other DD's names, but then realised it sounds a bit like Doris Day! Mae would just be a middle name not a hypenated name so would it really matter? Or it is does can you suggest one syllable middle names that go with Doris? We already have a Bea.

I actually like Dorit, Tessa, Ivy, Violet, Edith but all vetoed by DH (though there is a glimpse of hope on Violet but one of our other DD's is also a flower name)

Basically think old lady names especially with an s sound in.
:)

(Hypothetical boy name is Alfred John)

Thick ankled porridge stirrer! What the hell?! Shock you have such a way with words, Squoosh!

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 19/11/2014 14:52

The op may not care about being fashionable, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't want to saddle her child with a name which sounds dated. Old lady chic is starting to sound very dated IMO.

burgatroyd · 19/11/2014 14:55

How about Elaine, Iris or Gloria?

They are nice old lady names.

VoyagesOfAStarship · 19/11/2014 15:00

Oh I think people's objections to Doris are entirely cultural. It's not a harsh or lumpy-sounding name actually, it just has outdated, negative old lady connotations and it's ripe for reclaiming. If you'd never heard of Doris and someone made it up, you wouldn't think it sounded bad, it's quite interesting and flowing with nice sounds in it.

There are plenty of names that are quite popular but not pretty-sounding - Imogen, Megan, Madison, Brooke etc. No one is horrified by them sounding uncool.

I wish I was called Doris instead of my boring prissy name!

squoosh · 19/11/2014 15:02

I'm all for people changing their own name to Doris if they so wish, I'm just against people inflicting it on an innocent newborn.

Elaine and Iris are fine names burgatroyd and Gloria is a marvellous name!

Bowlersarm · 19/11/2014 15:05

I think Doris has a horrible flow to it voyager. It's just not nice. We are clearly on a totally different wave length as I think Imogen, Megan etc are very pretty.

And burgatroyd how old are your old ladies. 50? Elaine isn't an old lady name to me.

I'm with squoosh, Doris is a thick ankled porridge stirred, about as wide as she is tall.

Rox19 · 19/11/2014 15:15

My nan is Doris and always hated the name.

She has always asked to be called polly or poll.

MsCoconut · 19/11/2014 15:30

burgatroyd · 19/11/2014 19:40

Why is Beryl bad! Its so cheerful.

Gileswithachainsaw · 19/11/2014 19:47

cheerful? beryl is the grumpy witch who spends twenty minutes in the queue then a further ten minutes at the checkout scrabbling around for change in tesco in everyone's lunch break when she's had all day, while barking orders at her harassed husband who's trying desperately to look as if he's not with her.

Not cheerful at all Grin

VoyagesOfAStarship · 19/11/2014 19:49

I knew a fantastic and inspirational Beryl when I was growing up. She used to do double denim in her 80s.

squoosh · 19/11/2014 19:50
